Chris Lyman is the Founder and Chairman of the Board at Fonality. Fonality creates innovative and affordable phone systems for small and medium businesses. Our products include PBXtra, trixbox Pro, and trixbox CE.
The rantings of a serial entrepreneur as he wins, loses, and doesn't pull any punches in describing both...
So, it's been a pretty crappy economy. And, at Fonality we have felt some of this pain. Our primary product is a phone system and companies tend to buy less of these when they are firing their staff. 2009 hasn't been devastating but this certainly doesn't look like the first half of 2008. Has it been all bad news? No. We have used this time to: make ourselves more efficient, invest heavily in R&D, and analyze areas of the business that don't get noticed when you are doubling in size every single year.
But, sometimes when things are down, you just really need to hit someone. So, why not hit your boss? As such, the Fonality employees have decided to have some fun...at each other's expense. They have launched their own official FIGHT CLUB. Our first rule of FIGHT CLUB is: tell everyone about FIGHT CLUB!
So, what does this all mean? Well, it means that in six weeks a bunch of tech geeks, with no previous fighting experience, will be getting into a ring and attempting to knock out or submit each other in a UFC-style MMA tournament. Six weeks isn't a lot of time to get in shape, start eating right, learn how to fight, and learn how to not get hurt. But, six weeks it is.
While risque, the whole endeavor has been hilarious and has notably improved the office morale. I walked out of my office the other day and saw 10 support folks all hanging around an ab roller, seeing who could do more ab rolls. When is the last time you saw a bunch of geeks competing on stomach crunches? :)

So far 17 fighters, including myself, have signed up. It's gonna be wild! Just yesterday a support engineer signed up...in MY weight class. He has 3 years of extensive Karate and Boxing experience. Compare that to my 3 days and..well...I'm not only reaching for the stars but I will likely end up seeing a few in June.
Sincerely,
Chris 'The CEOMFG STFU' Lyman

Awesome!
That's quite the morale booster, Chris! The thought of working for "the man" is a foreign concept to me (well, except in the military), and quite distasteful, but if I could *battle* that man... well, perhaps all "normal jobs" don't suck ;)
Kudos on creating what, at least from your blog posts, appears to be quite the fun place to work!
Jealous
where do I submit a resume? ;)
You will have to update your ACD Queue modes to include a "workout" mode that automatically forwards your calls to everyone else's phones in your weightclass, and your supervisor's calls to your trainer.
Haha...ouch my neck
Don't give my engineer's any ideas! They will handicap their least favorite fighters by limiting their training time by clever hacking!
I went 4x last week and spent the last three days with ice on my neck. At 35 years old, it's hard to get into this fight game!

This might be the best idea ever...
I'd love to unleash a little ground-n-pound on my coworkers...must figure out a way to convince others this is a good thing to do.
You going to video tape this? Perhaps stream it live? PPV baby!
Yah we will tape it
...and maybe stream it live too...

But, I warn you. Six weeks isn't a lot of time to take bunch of tech geeks and turn them into trained killers. My coach says we will: "look like men drowning as we flail our arms."
That being said, even flailing arms can knock someone out.
What was I thinking. I'm ten years older than these boys...lol...but in the best shape of the last 15 years!

Heck, sell tickets!
Heck, sell tickets!
Involve Clients and Competition
Chris: this is one damn good idea you have going here.. not only for an internal morale booster but quite possibly the best way to get client prospects engaged in your business. If I was on your sales team, I'd invite my client prospect to the event or even offer up the challenge to a inter-company "fight night". Yeah, maybe its a bit of a stretch to imagine some old management fart donning MMA trunks (do they even make them that long in the crotch?) for the night but what an incredible pub stunt! I'd also challenge my competition to a fight... best man standing, et al... great PR for Fonality especially if ya have some real grapplers. As a tenured VoIP sales guy, I'd kickin' butt with the PR aspect. Would love, for sure, to work with guys like you! Keep it up!
Resellers vs FFC
Lets take this thing gobal!
Resellers vs FFC, maybe TAP vs FFC.
An annual rumble in LA (ha-ha).
