Call Pickup

Hello Everyone,

With a good old fashioned PABX (I.E. A Panasonic Hybrid System), there was a special code you could dial to pickup an incoming call from any extension. This is useful if fore example, the receptionist has finished for the day and the boss is still in the office. He can pickup his phone, dial the code and that picks up the call.

Is there any functionality like this in Trixbox / Asterisk? This is a feature that is used by many businesses and is useful to no end. I have tired using the *8 code, but my phone just says "Unavailable".

Any ideas?

Thanks

It doesn't work!!

I tried and re-tried both of those to codes and nothing happens.

When I dial *8 I get "Unavailable" on my SIP phone.
When I try and dial the code to specify the extension, it says declined.

Do these codes still work in TrixBox 2.8? I am finding that a lot of things have changed in this version (I thought I was going nuts when I couldn't find the zapata.conf file). I am wondering if some genius has changed the code, or left it out all together.

Any other ideas?

Local dialplan

Make sure the local dialplan in the phone instrument allows the *8. Also make sure the two extensions in question are in the same call pick up group.

Nope, all is fine.

The phone itself is setup correctly. All other feature codes work, and I haven't actually put a specific dial plan into the phone (dial 1 to call outside the system via PSTN).
I am not sure however what you mean by "call pickup group". Can you clarify? I was under the impression that the *8 feature would just pickup a call from whatever phone was ringing. Is not correct? Also what would happen if two phones were ringing for different calls (i.e. two inbound calls to two different extensions / ring groups)?

Thanks

you have to first enable the

you have to first enable the features code(don't remember where) then in each extension set pickup group 1 for all.

pickup group is a setting on

pickup group is a setting on the extension (same place you configure an extension password) I think *8 picks up any call on a phone in the same pickup group. I guess sometimes you dont want a general use lobby phone being able to pick up the boss's calls

Still doesn't work.

Ok, I have it working. I updated both the "pickupgroup" and "callgroup" and set them to one. This now works. I am using Snom handsets.
One question for you to ponder, you say that you don't want the lobby phone to be able to pickup the bosses calls and I understand that, however what if you want normal staff to be able to pickup a call from the receptionists phone when she is out to lunch etc but not the bosses phone. However the boss wants to be able to pickup calls from the receptionists phone and his PA. His PA also needs to be able to pickup calls from the bosses phone and all other general calls.

Any ideas?

No Takers?

No one can come up with a solution to this situation?
