I'm set up with deviceanduser and now need a naming convention for the "Device ID" and the "Description". If the phones get moved around it seems pointless to name them with a location. I thought about of the mac or something. Anyone have a good scheme to follow?

Cisco CUCM uses

Cisco CUCM uses XXXMMMMMMMMMMMM as the Device ID, where XXX is a three letter symbol for the device type (ATA, SIP, SEP, etc.) and MMMMMMMMMMMM is the MAC address without dashes, periods, colons, or other symbols. This seems to work out well since those two things will never change. The description is more for administration purposes. If the phones are guaranteed to never move, good luck, then use the location. If the phone is for a dedicated purpose or person, more likely, then use that as a description. I would think Person-Extension would be a good start for a description for record keeping and management purposes.

Well for now I've taken a marker and labeled the phones 1, 2, 3, etc on the bottom. This is what I made the device id. It's easy for now. Thanks for the ideas!
