Unable to leave voice mail. Extension rings but after a while a recording comes up saying that an error has occurred and call is terminated.
What is the nature of this problem?

Either there isn't a voicemail directory for the user on the system or the permissions are wrong. Make sure there is a directory for the user in /var/spool/asterisk/voicemail/default and
chmod –R 720 /var/spool/asterisk/voicemail
chown -R asterisk:asterisk /var/spool/asterisk/voicemail
 
changed file permission and ownership
