One of the things that has kept me from seriously considering Asterisk for enterprise VoIP is the godawful voicemail system that's included with Asterisk. Is there anyone here that knows of a "drop in" replacement for the built in voicemail system? There is one caveat: it needs to be managed from within FreePBX, otherwise it's not really useful. Please don't say Microsoft UM either as this doesn't fit the criteria.
Asterisk voicemail replacement
What do you dislike about the asterisk voicemail? Perhaps it's easier to tweak it to your liking than to discard it altogether.
As an example, the ability to do an impromptu voicemail blast. Here is what I mean:
Where you would normally press 5 under advanced options to send a message, or whenever forwarding a message, after sending it to one person, send it to however many more you wish to send it to without having to re-record the message for each recipient.
Some other things that are standard in many other voicemail systems that are absent in asterisk voicemail:
- Numeric Pager callout and/or voice notification callout when new voicemail is received without having to make massive dialplan changes
- In ARI, the ability to set a text subject and/or description for voicemail messages. This makes message searching MUCH easier.
- The ability for a user to set their own voicmail distribution lists (aka voicemail blast lists) in ARI and call them up when they are sending a voice message from within the voicemail system.
I'll assume by the lack of responses that what I'm looking for does not exist or is not feasible to implement.
hey Josh i see your list of requirements. i am sure this can be done if you pay a developer to implement . i see that this issue is really bugging you... so would you be prepared to pay a developer and then release back to the community at Free open source ? paying to get the work done is the very best way to improve the product , just posting in here and waiting for somebody else to pick up the ball is not very effective in solving your problem.
Josh -
Have you looked at Asterisk 1.6 Voicemail?
I will make you a hell of a deal on four Sun Netra servers and a 1000 seat IPeria license.
Have you looked at Asterisk 1.6 Voicemail?
the voicemail I was referring to was Asterisk 1.6.0.6 voicemail.
so would you be prepared to pay a developer and then release back to the community at Free open source ?
If I had the resources available, then yes I would. The voicemail implementation in sipX does all of these things I asked for above except the numeric pager dialout, and I wrote a small python script and asterisk dial plan to take care of that.
The only problem with sipX is that it uses very recent SIP RFC standards that most SIP equipment manufacturers do not yet fully support. As such, my hardware behaves strangely with sipX but functions fine with Asterisk due to the limited SIP functionality of Asterisk.
Scott: thanks for the iPeria offer, but unless it "replaces" asterisk voicemail.c then it won't do me any good (FreePBX integration)
