Can somebody help me out with a problem with my network card. It does not seem to be recognized or work properly. I have bought 2 different type of cards and still I get nothing.

When Trixbox boots up , it tries to use the network card but it keeps saying irq#9 disable.
and then it stop trying. I log in and it tell me the ETH0 not instlled.

Network card

Have you checked the Bios settings to see if the IRQ's are shared by anything else?
Have you tried moving the card to a different PCI slot?
What is the output of the command 'lspci' after the machine has booted?
Which version of trixbox are you using?
Have you tried booting the machine with a Knoppix live CD to see whether Knoppix recognises and configures the NIC?
What are the makes of the two cards? What is the mobo?

Hello John, Thanks for your

Hello John, Thanks for your reply.
I looked at the bios, but I am unsure of how to check it the irq are being shared by anything. I have turned audio, serial. parallel and on board NIC off (disable) I am unsure what else I can turn off. I am using v2.4.0. CentOS 5.
I have looked at this on the centOS webpage, I manage to download the file and burn the image but i do not know where the files need to be copied to.
link:
http://wiki.centos.org/HardwareList/CentOS5/RealTek/r1000 and http://wiki.centos.org/HardwareList/RealTekRTL8111b as i have 4 NIC that I am trying to see which one does the trick.

Just to give you more details on what I have and What I have experienced

1)Intel BOXD945GCNL mATX LGA775 945GC PCI-E16 1PCI-E1 2PCI SATA Video Sound GBLAN Motherboard

2)Intel Pentium Dual Core E2180 Dual Core Processor LGA775 2.0GHZ 800FSB 1MB Retail Box

3)Crucial Rendition 1GB PC2-5300 DDR2-667 240PIN DIMM Memory x2

4) LG GSA-H62N SATA DVD+RW 18X8X16 DVD-RW 18X6X16 DL 10X Black OEM DVD Writer W/ SW

5)Antec NSK4480 New Solution ATX Mini Tower Case 3X5.25 2X3.5 3X3.5INT 380W ATX12V V2.0 Black

6) Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 80GB IDE ATA100 2MB 11MS 7200RPM Hard Drive 5YR MFR Warranty

7) D-LINK DFE-538TX 10/100 ETHERNET ADAPTER PCI

I was able to install Trixbox on it, but I am having issues with the network card. D-LINK DFE-538TX 10/100 ETHERNET ADAPTER PCI.

It keeps telling me that the eth0 has not been install. and then when it goes to try eht1 it sits there for ever and it says IRQ #9 disable. I tried to changed to the other PCI slot and nothing. I Even went and got a two new card with the realtek chipset thinking that it may solve the issue but nothing. the two other cards i got are from stlab and it say that it is supoorted by linux.

I move the hard drives to another system Dell inspirion 5550 and trixbox runs without a problem, I even installed the Dlink network card and it works.

I guess there is something i need to do. Could anyone tell me what i need to do to make the network card work?

I disable the serial port and the onboard lan and audio from the bios. but still nothing.

when i did lspci -v i got something very similar to this:

04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 01)
Subsystem: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. Unknown device 360c
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 17
I/O ports at e800 [size=256]
Memory at febff000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4K]
Expansion ROM at febc0000 [disabled] [size=128K]
Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [48] Vital Product Data
Capabilities: [50] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask- 64bit+ Queue=0/1 Enable-
Capabilities: [60] Express Endpoint IRQ 0
Capabilities: [84] Vendor Specific Information

To answer the lat question: no I have not tried the Knoppix live CD yet. I will try to get it tomorrow orning and try to see i results i get.

Thanks

On board Gigabit Nic problems

Please look at this thread. You have the same mobo and the same problem with the on board NIC. http://www.trixbox.org/forums/trixbox-forums/help/cant-find-onboa... In my posts there I gave a link to downloading the correct source and building it. However, the general consensus seems to be that is not worth the effort. You could try to get hold of an intel or 3com NIC both should be recognised by centos.

However, you don't seem to have disabled the onboard gigalan nic. It is showing up as

Quote:
RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 01)

in your lspci output. You probably need to sort this out first.

The 538TX needs the 8139too driver which on my TB2.0 is in /lib/modules/2.6.9-34.0.2.EL/kernel/drivers/net/

You could try loading that module but if you google you will find several threads on various linux forums where people have problems with this card. Intel and 3com nics are usually easy to setup :)

Thanks for your reply

I have tried 4 different NIC so far, and yesterday i tried yet another, same one as i have on another TB. The problem was that the card was DOA. So no luck. (Desktop Network PCI Card F5D5000)
I will go and find a Intel NIC or 3Com. any suggestions on which one?

Which 3com NIC

3com support http://support.3com.com/infodeli/inotes/techtran/5a96_5ea.htm

Quote:
The 3c590/3c592/3c595/3c597 and 3C905 Families are supported
with the 3c59x driver from Donald Becker. Technical support for the
3c59x Linux driver can be found at: ....

The driver is already installed on centos 4.x and probably on centos 5 as well. So a 3c590 or 3c905 should work. I have bought lots of 10/100 nics on ebay. such as this on the UK site.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3COM-PCI-NIC-Ethernet-10-100-Network-Card-3...

On intel you could try an intel pro 100 which uses the eepro100 driver. Before you buy the card google for your " 'card model number' linux nic driver " and see what others have said

I will look for the Intel

I will look for the Intel card. Thanks again for you reply and guidance.
I really appreciate your help.

I have moved the HDD to another PC and it work with that PC and built in NIC. this is the type:

02:08.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB PRO/100 VE (LOM) Ethernet Controller (rev 81)
Subsystem: Dell Unknown device 0142
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 193
Memory at fe1fe000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4K]
I/O ports at ecc0 [size=64]
Capabilities: [dc] Power Management version 2

One more thing i wanted to ask, what are you supposed to do with the files from the image that i downloaded from CentOS for the NIC?
modinfo, modules.cgz, pcitable, modules.alias, modules .dep, rhdd??
