Hello everyone,
I just bought Cisco IP Phones 7940 and 7960. its got the original configuration, where it looks for Call Manager.
I tried to unlock the phone by going to settings-->network settings, but I cannot change any thing in the network settings. I even tried to change it from the web by accessing the phone IP address, but its in read only mode.
I made some research online and I found that I need go to Settings-->network settings --> unlock configuraition.
I dont have the "unlock configuration" option on the phone screen.
Please help, I am about to go nuts.
Thanks
Re-provessioning Cisco IP Phones 7960 / 7940
When we buy used Cisco 7940 phones we do the following:
1. Press **# at the main window to unlock the phone
2. Settings | Network
3. Erase configuration and save
4. Settings | Network
5. Alternate TFTP : YES
6. Edit TFTP address to Trixbox server's IP
7. Using the Trixbox endpoint manager create the config file for the phone
or, copy the files from existing server and edit as necessary
8. Reboot the phone
The default password to unlock the phone is "cisco" without the quotes. Do you have the SIP firmware for the phone? If yes, you will find a much better experience if you use it instead of the sccp load that every Cisco phone ships with. Please be aware that if the phone was bought as a spare, you may not have the legally required right to use license, and, Cisco is very tight with the firmware and will require a smartnet contract to obtain it from them.
I have used Polycom, Linksys, Linksys PAP, and Cisco hard phones on my deployment. All the phones are very capable, but, for a centralized deployment, the Cisco phone has to be the easiest. The only trick, make sure the right firmware reference is in the sipdefault.cnf. Example, image_version: "P0S3-08-6-00". The endpoint manager can do the rest for you... and does just fine.
I tried what you said, but I cannot even get there, all I am getting when I first power up the phone, is Configuring VLAN, and then Configuring IP, and it stays like that as long as I keep it powered on.
I can access the web page for it, but I cannot modify anything.
Ok, you were right, I finally got to unlock the settings on it. its saying now "Deafulting CM to TFTP Server".
I did enable the TFTP server and I put the trixbox IP address as the TFTP server.
what you think I should do next?
Thanks
That's it just use the endpoint manager to create a config file. you will need the SIP firmware.
Ok, I did everything you said, and I think the phone can see the trixbox server now.
the trixbox ip address is the TFTP server IP address on the phone. I configured the phone with its MAC addres on the endpoint of the trixbox to register on a SIP Extension. but the phone says "Registration Rejected".
can you help me with this error ?
Thanks
What is the exact firmware version you have on the phone?
The firmware version is 3.1(4.3)
Can you go to the settings button (lower right of help), then "Status", then "Firmware Versions". If you have SIP firmware (compatible with Trixbox), you will see "Application Load ID then "POSx-xx-x-xx" or something similar... What do you see there? If it is SCCP, you will likely see "POO....."
I bought a 7960 used and I cant get to the Settings section to unlock. I have several 7960Gs that upgraded to POS3-08-2-00 fine, but this one errors on "Protocal Application Invalid" when it boots. I cant access the config to unlock and set the TFTP server.
Also, I am on a Windows LAN, so TrixBox DHCP is not enabled. Would I have to take it off the Windows LAN to reprog this phone?
Thanks for any help!
I'm on the same point to but i think this is cuz of the FW version & i've just add the tftp server addresse to the cisco 7940,still can't download the FW version 8.2
Pls help me on htis point
Are you still having issues with this? If so, can you list the following files from your TFTP root directory?
*.xml
*.cnf (you can mask out your MAC if you want)
*.bin
*.txt
And show the contents of the OS79XX.TXT file
check the OS79XX.TXT and see if it has P003-08-2-00 or P0S3-08-2-00.
The loader changed around 3-07-5 or so . . .
If it has P00 - change the prefix to P0S, save it then reboot the phone
I also had to rename the bin file from P003-08-2-00.bin to P0S3-08-2-00.bin to get mine to work.
I have been trying to load the SIP firmware to my 7940 phone. I have done what was listed above, but the phone will always display "Protocol Application Invalid"
Below are hte files that are in my tftp Directory:
OS79XX.TXT - Which contains P0S3-08-2-00
P003-08-2-00.sbn
P0S3-08-2-00.bin
P0S3-08-2-00.loads
P0S3-08-2-00.sb2
SIP>.cnf
SIPDefault.cnf
When the phone boots it gets an ip address and connects to the tftp server, the display then reads:
"TFTP P0S3-08-2-00.loads"
and then the message "Protocol Application Invalid"
Please help!!!
I figured out my problem and it was when I was copying the files from Cisco to the trixbox tftp server, they didn't copy properly. I setup a windows tftp server and everything works great. Thank you.
1 question though, how can I get the files needed to the Trixbox tftp server properly? I copied them with winscp.
voipinfo has a great article on this - Here is the link:

Had the same issue, and through some tricks with DHCP and this page, I brought it back from the Dead.
Good Luck.

Default config seems to configure a single line on the 7940. Can the file be modified to activate the second button?
save folling text to the config file

I have a new 7960 from ebay. looks new. I cannot get to the settings screen. I have 7940's and settings screen is available after I plug in power supply whether ethernet is plugged in or not. 7960 Just says "Ethernet disconnected". I tried **# then settings, nothing. I have even did the 123456789*0# at boot and it will come up and ask if i want to clear settings, I say yes. Still no way to get to settings to set to my LAN. If I hook up the lan cable, (which is also powered by a Cisco 3500POE), it goes to VLAN config or IP config and then goes to "protocol application Invalid" with a little "o" and "a" at the end.
Any help on how to get to the settings menu so I can load SIP would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Jeff
