Recovering Cisco 7940/7960 from "Protocol Application Invalid"

I had a Cisco 7960 that booted to the error message "Protocol Application Invalid" and at that point was useless. I managed to sort the problem out with the help of various web resources and make the phone usable again.

The solution is basically to add the appropriate "option 150" to dhcpd.conf

In searching the forums here I found a number of threads that contain the same error message and do not appear to contain a solution for making the phones work again. I put a "How-To" on my website and thought I would post the link here in case it was of any help to other users with 7940 & 7960 phones that would not boot. The how-to is here http://cat24.net/Cisco_Sip_Phones.html

If anyone finds errors or needs clarification please let me know.

John

Do I have to have a server to use a 7960?

I'm a small business owner that wanted to use a professional phone so I chose the Cisco 7960G that I got off eBay. I currently have a digital phone line through ringcentral.com and there help section said this phone was able to be used with there service.

When I got the phone today it booted up to that initial setup screen and I could go through all the menus but couldn't find the place where I could input my SIP Domain and stuff (I didn't read the setup instructions from ringcentral first). So I unplugged the phone from the power and plugged it back in and got the message TFTP Server Invalid and could do nothing from that point. So I did a factory reset (Resetting phone holding # and typing 123456789*0#, option 2 "no") and now it just boots to a message saying "Protocol Application Invalid".

I downloaded that trixbox ISO file but there are no executables in the ISO image, I'm running Vista Ultimate 32 bit edition with service pack 1.

I've been reading all afternoon and everyone is talking this technical language that I have no idea what it means. I just want this phone to work on my home network, I have a D-Link DIR-615 Wireless N router that the phone is hardwired into.

Here are the instructions from the ringcentral website:

Cisco 7960/7940 and 7905 SIP telephones - Installation and Setup instructions

Question
Cisco SIP telephones - Installation and Setup instructions to connect on the RingCentral DigitalLine network

Answer
Cisco SIP-based 7960/7940 and 7905 VoIP phones work well on RingCentral's DigitalLine network. As a "bring-your-own" VoIP phone, you will need to install and provision the Cisco equipment yourself. Below are are two sets of instructions to help you connect your 7960/7940 or 7905 SIP-based VoIP phone onto RingCentral:

Cisco 7960/7940 - You must enter the information into the phone directly (using the dial pad).

Note: When entering text on the dial pad, press the Alpha/Number key to switch between numbers (0-9) and letters (Az-Zz), and use * (star) for ". (dot)" and 1 (one) for ": (colon)".

The default administrator login information for a Cisco phone is:

Password: cisco

Press the Menu button on the phone.
Press 9 (or scroll and select Unlock Config in the menu).
Enter your administrator password (default: cisco)
Press Accept.
Press 4 (or scroll and select SIP Configuration in the menu).
Press 1 (or scroll and select Line 1 Settings in the menu).
Press 1 (or scroll and select Name in the menu).
Press Edit.
Enter your RingCentral DigitalLine Phone Number.
Press Accept.
Press 3 (or scroll and select Authentication Name in the menu).
Press Edit.
Enter your RingCentral Authorization ID.
Press Accept.
Press 4 (or scroll and select Authentication Password in the menu).
Press Edit.
Enter your RingCentral Password.
Press Accept.
Press 6 (or scroll and select Proxy Address in the menu).
Press Edit.
Enter sip.ringcentral.com.
Press Accept.
Press 7 (or scroll and select Proxy Port in the menu).
Press Edit.
Enter 5060.
Press Accept.
Next, press Save.
Press 4 (or scroll and select SIP Configuration in the menu).
Press 10 (or scroll and select Register with Proxy in the menu).
Ensure it reads "Yes", or press Yes to change it.
Press 22 (or scroll and select Outbound Proxy in the menu).
Press Edit.
Enter 208.87.41.22
Press Accept.
Press 23 (or scroll and select Outbound Proxy Port in the menu).
Press Edit.
Enter 5090.
Press Accept.
Press Save.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I just need to get back to that main menu to input those settings but have no idea how to do that. Can you help?

Cisco Phones are not for a VoIP Newb

Jay-rod

I would not recommend a Cisco phone to someone trying to configure a SIP phone manually. As far as I know, you must input the SIP credentials (username and password) in the SIPmac_address.CNF file for the phone to load properly. To get this file to load you must have a TFTP server locally to have the phone connect to. With the TFTP server you must have the Cisco verified image files (firmware version file) for the phones to load up at all. These files must come from Cisco, as far as I know.

If you are looking to setup an IP phone for SIP, I would look at a Polycom phone, MUCH easier to configure and more reliable.

The ISO for trixbox is a CD image file that is installed on a UNIX box, such as Fedora or CentOs. I don't believe TrixBox is windows compatible.

good luck!

7940G - Really stuck

Hello there,

I decided that it would be a good idea to learn how to use the Cisco IP phones (home learning), so I baught a second hand 7940G. When I got it it was abviously still configured for the previous owners network, so I did a factory reset and told it NOT to keep the network config. But I now keep getting error:

When it tries to boot now it keeps getting stuck on "Protocol Invalid Application"

I have tried resets 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 * 0 # also *6 hold #. after it does resetting and trying to boot showing configuring VLAN and IP etc it goes back to the error. It looked like after the error there was a small 0 and and "A" and I thought it could be a small padlock? so i tried **# but it do anything.

I am using Trixbox for the VOIP PBX, as it is free and I can't afford to pay out for CCM etc.

Please can anybody help?

Guy

What directions did you

What directions did you follow for setting up your phone?

Do you have your tftp server running?

More details, your post did not tell much.

I also deleted your duplicate post, please don't do that again and moved this whole thread to the correct room.

DHCP...

Hi guys!

The link in the last post didn't work for me, so I don't know if this issue is solved...

I've had the same thing happen and it turns out this is usually caused by DHCP bleeding over VLANs during the multiple reboots the Cisco phones go through while updating firmware or pulling the config. Every phone I've had with this error was was fixed by the following:

1. Shutdown/disable any other DHCP servers you have running on the network and only keep the primary DHCP server up
2. Make sure you specify Option 150 in the DHCP scope to point to your TFTP server and make sure the TFTP server is active
3. Follow the steps to do a factory reset on the Cisco phone
4. The phone should boot up and grab the correct IP -- if all goes well the phone should pull its config and run normally. If it doesn't, put a different version of firmware on
the TFTP server (see Cisco docs regarding upgrade/downgrade limitations) and let the phone come back up. After it comes up, swap out the firmware files on the TFTP
server and reboot the phone again.

Hope this helps!

VLAN's don't "bleed" unless

VLAN's don't "bleed" unless switches are misconfigured. Only one network should be untagged and that is what is called the native VLAN.

Scott, You're totally right.

Scott,

You're totally right. I was just saying from previous experience of having multiple VLANs with switches that were misconfigured the Cisco phones would have this error when upgrading firmware/config.

Check out this link directly from Cisco, it may offer some help:

I made that post for

I made that post for clarification since there seems to be a general mistrust of VLAN's.

They are a great tool and very simple to configure.
