Working late tonight on a customers box, just noted something interesting:

[t asterisk]# uptime
 02:29:11 up 392 days, 30 min, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.01, 0.00
[1.net asterisk]#

This is a machine that runs 200k minutes a month.

Asterisk and CentOS just keep on running.

(Machine was built with trixbox 2.6.05 originally...Still running original Kernel)

Bad practice

It's a common "bad" practice to never reboot a server. You should always schedule a reboot every once in a while so that you know that any startup scripts, etc. are still functioning.

In the Windows world...

I too have a long running linux server that is showing: Uptime: 311 days 18 hours 22 minutes

...And it runs flawlessly! If this were a Windows box OMG! What a mess we would have had long ago! Of course we would have to reboot for updates of all kinds. I have never seen, nor do I expect or believe 99.9% uptime or 24/7-365 is a reality in the Windows (server 2003 + included) world but I do see this often in the Linux world!

I believe the only time you really need to reboot a Linux box is when you have to update the kernel or do some other major file system change and that periodic reboots are simply not necessary.

I'll raise you

How about this:

[root@asterisk1 ~]# uptime
18:32:48 up 744 days, 20:00, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.02
[root@asterisk1 ~]#

This is actually A@H 2.8
