trixbox forums now availabe on BlackBerry and FeedBurner
Hey Folks,
Since the launch of the BlackBerry Curve I must admit I have been become a pretty serious BB addict. As such, I had begun to use Viigo on my BB to read various blogs and forums. So, recently I asked Pat (a web 2.0 stud from our web properties group) to add the trixbox forums to FeedBurner.
Well, he did. And, thanks to him, we can now all enjoy them without being in front of the computer. So, if you use a BlackBerry, or any other type of reader, you can try these URLs:
http://feeds.feedburner.com/trixbox
http://feeds.feedburner.com/trixboxcomments
Enjoy!
If you want drop Pat a thanks, his email is pgoddard@fonality.com.
Chris,
How are you doing with the memory and battery life? I have heard that the RAM is kind of limited and the battery doesn't last very long on the Curve. (I personally don't have one, but have heard complaints...)
BATTERY LIFE
Battery life is amazing (given that it is "always on and receiving email"). I get at least a full day of connectivity and I do email constantly on it. Every other phone I have tried to browse the web with all day and send 50 emails is dead by lunch. That being said there are some tricks to maximize life. For one: turn off bluetooth when you don't need it. Re-pairing is super easy on this device. For two, turn of any LEDs you can live without. Then, turn of your GPS if you don't use it (set it to 911 only with location to "off"). And, of course, the big kahuna - brightness. I keep mine at 50% which is more than enough to read while outdoors.
RAM
I find the RAM also quite sufficient. There is a handy 16K program that you can download OTA for free called MemMax that clears some junk you don't need (like themes). And, don't put anything on the device RAM that you don't need to. For instance, for $20 you can get a little 2GB MicroSD card and put all your video and photos on that thing. Just use the built-in for essential programs. Finally, only show as much messages as you need. I have mine set to show my last 30 days worth. I figure if I don't get to it in a month, I probably am better served to answer that email via my desktop web interface to Gmail.
As you can tell I am a phone geek - and this thing is the best phone I have ever had (and I have had about every phone that has ever come along, except the iphone which looks great but seems a bit consumer oriented for me).
I am assuming since you are pushing mail to the phone that you are using the RIM Exchange Connector?
I found the licensing model to be a bit onerous, that is why I am sticking with Windows Mobile based devices. I have not found one I like so your post was interesting to me. We are also an Exchange shop.
Forget Windows Mobile, BB OS is 1000 times superior.
Not to mention, RIM makes stable devices, which is more than I can say about any Windows-based device (Motorola, HTC, Samsung, etc).
We are on a BES and there's always tons of promos where for a smallbiz, you get get a BPSX (small version of the BES) and 5 licenses for FREE!
Make the switch and you'll never look back.

That's the best news I have heard all week. I have an old gen1 Q and I have yet to find anything I liked in Win Mobile. The only thing I wish the Curve had is wi-fi support.
Thanks.....
Scott,
Nope, no exchange here. I took the whole company off of Outlook/Exchange and Office six months ago. All 150 of us are on Gmail and GoogleDocs.
As such we don't even have BES. I just use the BB with BIS. $29.99 per month from Verizon for unlimited data. It's a pretty good deal.
I stay reconciled with my gmail using IMAP (which is oddly slow on reconcile) but super fast on delete and send and receive.

After years of suffering through Windows Mobile, I am thrilled to be on the stable BB OS. Those daily reboots and crashes are a thing of the past. I think my BB has needed a reboot twice in six months and both of those were probably because of the obscene amount of 3rd party software I have installed on it.
As for Wi-Fi support, I don't really miss it, because Verizon's EVDO network is actually really really fast. Heck, I could use this thing as a tethered broadband modem if I wanted to...it's that fast. Also, current Wi-Fi protocols tend to be onerous on battery life, so it is better not to have the temptation.
No, I don't work for RIM. :)

I'm on EV-DO rev. A. w/Verizon. The speed is excellent. We have coverage issues in our office so the wi-fi would be handy.
The stability of my Windows Mobile based Q is awful. My 'new in 2' is due at Verizon, I think I am going to take the plunge!
Thanks....
Look for In-Building coverage enhancement, I can probably install an amplifier circuit and get 4-5 bars throughout your building for under 3000$ installed...
For us, BES is actually the only reason I haven't switch the company over *nix all over. We have Exchange with a 40-user BES and wouldn't cope with BIS after having had full wireless reconcile and Push-email... I have to admit though that IMAP with IDLE support is nearly as fast as Push-email with low bandidth "polling".
Scott, a Q? Wow you're overdue... ;)
I have the curve with the beta firmware (may be release now I dunno) The only problem
I had was memory leaks but the new software fixed that and added video support. Battery life is awesome I only plug in every other day and I use bluetooth and get god knows how many emails a day. Now granted I am not a talker so I don't know talk time maybe use 6 hours a week primary use is messaging.
Curve definitely cool if you need the blackberry portion if not the service is overpriced.

Thanks for the offer on the in building repeater, I think we could take care of that if that was the path I wanted to take. Before I decided to devote full time attention to my ISP I was an engineer at Motorola in the Global Telecom Infrastructure group!
The reason I mention this is we have a strange arrangement, I merged my ISP with a service company two years ago. They where a Microsoft shop, Gold Partner the whole bit. I derive a large portion of my service revenue from MS products so our internal IT is all MS. The service provider infrastructure is *nix and Solaris.
And yeah I need to dump the Q, what is the story of the cobbler's kids having no shoes?

Thanks for the report on the Curve, I don't think I could get away with only a charge every other day, I average 3000-4000 minutes a month!

I imagine you would, and it's wasn't really an offer, but of a suggestion... I'm in Canada so business isn't that simple.
I have worked all over Canada, for the old Clearnet and Glenayre on the other side of your country in Vancouver.
So what's wrong with business in Canada, other than saying 'out and out' and 'process' different when I come back!
First, I say a whole bunch of things different because I'm a French Canadian ;)
Second, I meant business between us both, I wouldn't expect anyone in the US to give ME a contract for in-building enhancement. Not enough margin to justify traveling costs.
Good to see an old Clearnet employee, I work for Telus now, Clearnet started it all for us :)
Let me make it clear, never worked for Clearnet, worked for Motorola who supplied the infrastructure for the iden and some of the CDMA wireless networks. PM me if you want to shoot the breeze about Clearnet.
Chris - sorry for the thread creep.
