First-time install, almost there

Good eve,

First-time Asterisk/Trixbox user, and have (after about 20 hours work) had my first successes: I've gotten a development box going, in the form of a Compaq/HP DL580 G2 server, a Sangoma A101 T1 card, an Adtran 750 channel bank, and Trixbox CE.

In the interest of making things easier for others who may be trying the same thing, I'd like to share a few glitches I ran into. First, the installation script, as provided by Trixbox tech support, which was supposed to be "fully compatible" with Trixbox ISO's and install the Sangoma drivers, was anything but. No matter what I tried, it kept returning an error to the effect that the particular version of CentOS was not one of its compatible kernels, and I'd have to install the drivers manually.

Also, it seems the current ISO (2.8.0.3) has this bizarre issue where a few critical system directories, /sbin and /usr/sbin in particular, are not made part of the directory search path for any account other than logging in directly as root (a dangerous practice on any *nix type system). Easy enough to correct, but it caused plenty of initial grief when I tried to run the 'wancfg_dahdi' script, and it wouldn't run because it couldn't make the appropriate call to find out the OS version.

Those were the two major ones. Now that I've got a green T1 status light on both the card and channel bank, my next step is to find some serious documentation which will, hopefully, point me in the right direction to start configuring this monster. I plan to have a mix of FXO and FXS lines, all analog (hence the channel bank). The ultimate goal, besides giving us a new phone system to play with and joining C*NET (a private network run by Telephone Collectors International), will be to make it so I can pull dialtone from our home lines while I'm on the road -- and secure it so no unauthorized folk can do so.

Finally, a request to Trixbox staff: Please fix it so installing the A101's drivers, in the next ISO, is a bit easier.

Thanks much. Happy tweaking.
