Trixbox works

I am totally new to this VOIP stuff. Four weeks ago I didn't know anything about all this stuff and decided to move from my old PSTN telephony system to this VOIP stuff in order to save a few bucks and move to the new world of telephony. So, I read about the whole thing and downloaded the newest versions of following Asterisk distributions and tried installing them and make them work for me:

- Asterisk Now
- Elastix
- Druid
- trixbox CE

The one and only distribution that worked for me without any problems was trixboxCE. I am using a Linksys SPA3102 and a Cisco SPA2102 adapter and a few softphones, X-Lite, 3CX and Gizmo. I am using Gizmo/Google Voice, Sipcall and two other DID providers for in and outbound calls. Now, either I am so stupid that I can't make the other systems work for me or trixbox is so easy that even a stupid man like me can make it work. Either way it works fine for me.

So, I would like to thank Asterisk for providing the phone engine, FreePBX for providing a web interface that makes this complex stuff simple, trixbox for making it all work and Ben Sharif and some kind people on this forum for explaining it all to me.

So, thank you trixbox community for giving me this cool phone system. May Goat bless you all.

You missed PBX in a Flash,

You missed PBX in a Flash, Fonicaprojects and Elastix, three VERY competent distros that outperform trixbox any given time. And they all use the new FreePBX 2.6.0

As an old phone guy, I

As an old phone guy, I embraced asterisk / free pbx about 4 years ago. I buy pre built via associates and do all the install / endpoints and training ect. I was always a bit frightened to build them myself. Until now. I just built my first box from scratch with PSTN trunk and IAX trunk. I was very pleasantly surprised how easy the install from boot disk was.

So much so that I will build all simple boxes myself from now on. There is a few things I can see that dont seem to work right off the bat, but really good install.

Thanks Mikael

Thanks Mikael, for letting me know about PBX in a Flash and Fonicaprojects. I didn't come across these two up until now in my short journey into VOIP.

Elastix I tried and liked their approach to combine Asterisk with HylaFax and OpenFire. Actually I was pretty close to getting it all work for me. OpenFire worked, HylaFax worked but the phones were giving me some problem. One way sound or no sound. I don't know whether it has to do with the fact that they are using an older version of Asterisk in their distro. As I said, I am pretty new to this stuff and wasn't able to find out the cause.

Anyhow, thanks to you, I now have two options more. I will download them and give them a shot too. I like looking at all options before making any final decisions. As trixbox is working for me, I am in no hurry. I can do my initial learning process on trixbox and also have a deeper look into the other distros by installing them on a Virtual Machine.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge with me, my friend

Do you?

bull_tpk, do you only use trixbox or do you also use the other distros?
What are your experiences with the other distros?

Fonica & PBX in a Flash

Fonica
Went to the Fonica site, downloaded it and installed it. First problem, wouldn't let me log into Avant Fax. Tried using admin / admin, then went to the AvantFAX site and found out that the default user id and password for AvantfFAX are admin / password. Tried using them, didn't work. Then I did a FreePBX update via the FreePBX interface to version 2.6 and now I can't login into FreePBX anymore.

PBX in a Flash
The website scared the hell out of me. This looks a bit too technical for a newbie like me.

I am sure that these distros are very powerful and very good. Someone who is an expert can surely utilize the capabilities of these systems. All I can say that as a newbie with not much technical knowledge, trixbox is the easiest to install. I am just talking about my personal experience that I had with the various distros.

So, for the time being I am going to stick to trixbox.

The distributions are a

The distributions are a great place to learn and useful for smaller end users.

I got to a certain point with our customers I wanted more control over the Asterisk/FreePBX version that was being run. We build our own Asterisk from source and keep a private repository. It makes change management and inclusion of third party drivers much simpler. As a for instance we only load the DAHDI drivers we need so DAHDI doesn't have to prove every default driver installed.

Who, The default passwords

Who,

The default passwords for Fonica are:
FreePBX web interface default username is admin with password admin
Hylafax GUI, default username is admin with password password. This is changed on first login.
Web-Meetme conferencing, default user is root@localhost with password password
Webmin - the root password you set on install.
ARI, extension number and Voicemail password, or for admin username admin with password ari_password
This is changed by editing /var/www/html/recordings*/includes/main.conf.php Line 73
Flash Operator Panel, same user and password as FreePBX, security code is passw0rd

All found at http://www.fonicaprojects.com/wiki/index.php/FonicaPABX-Install

After upgrading to FreePBX 2.6.0 for Fonica follow this link for a fix.
The above is because Fonica uses .htaccess and the security was changed in FreePBX for passwords, they are now encrypted with sha1.

Enjoy your newfound hobby

Thank you for taking the time and showing me the path to the links. I now have a choice between 6 different distros and I will play with them. trixbox will be my starting point as it is already working for me. Oh, and I surely am going to enjoy this stuff. I love toys for boys, hehehehe.

Thank you for welcoming me to the community. I like this place, people have been very nice and friendly and helpful. Well, what can I say about trixbox. I think I have already said it. trixbox is the one and only distro that worked for me without any problems. Hardphones are working, softphones are working, IVR is working, MOH is working, voicemail and voicemail forwarding via mail is working. So, basically everything that I need is working for me. And yes, it is easy to install and use, compared to the other distros I tried, so I absolutely, totally and unconditionally agree with you.
