trying out allo.com

Comcast decided to discontinue my old "digital phone" service ($24/mo) and said I needed to go with "digital voice" ($38/mo) the difference is long distance that I don't need (cell phone anyone?) so I'm trying out allo.com.

Incoming calls have worked fine thus far - the call quality is good and all. The problems: caller ID isn't being passed (could be because I'm still on a "temporary" number until my actual number is ported) and outgoing calls terminate after 22-24 seconds. Did a webchat with a person there this evening and they said they're going to get it passed along to an upper tech guy.

We'll see how it works out!

they changed their instructions and removed "context=from-pstn" from the outgoing trunk - we'll see if that fixes it

yes, they have it on their site. It's nice that they have screencaps of exactly what you need to enter into freepbx to get connected, too bad there was a typo in the first revision =) I'm actually pretty optimistic about it all looks like were're running into some odd bugs is all.

their point-of-presence in losangeles seems to be having issues. They had me try another one and all of the other ones (dallas, seattle, new york, miami) seem to work just fine. Looks like the only remaining issue is callerid not being passed.

indeed. It's also nice to have multiple servers so you can grab the one with the fastest connection to you.

Another fun thing: googling the name of the tech guy I've been in contact with yields a bunch of posts to the digium mailing lists from a few years ago.

hey there,

hey there,
i'm glad you were able to have your trixbox connected ;)
we had a momentary down time in one of our LA proxy.. in any case, we have 2 IPs for each location, running independant Proxy, so the other ip was still up.

For outgoing caller ID, you can control it thru your web portal , under features. Although, we include full asterisk user callerid control in our next backbone release, where you will be
able to control the outgoing callerid (ANI) directly from your context (or config if trixbox).

For optimazing your connection to allo.com, at this point i suggest you ping each of our proxy ips (http://www.allo.com/asterisk/index.php) and estabish which one is better for you. Nothing stops you from registering to multiple proxy if you want to increase your redundancy. We're soon releasing an automated linux script that will do the pinging for you on a regular basis and refresh the proxy ip you connect to.

Yeah, got the caller ID

Yeah, got the caller ID taken care of - but the control panel on allo only lets you control the number that is sent out, not the text string.

That script will be pretty handy. Currently I have WhatsUp Gold keeping tabs on the latency of the different proxys. I started running it when I first was thinking of signing up with allo.com.

Well, at any rate, it all seems to be working good, I've been using allo as my outbound for almost a week now and it seems fine. All that's left now is for the porting of my number from Comcast and I'll be set.

for those of you listening

for those of you listening at home: you need to fill out a sheet and fax it in, in addition to everything else. I would recommend to allo that they include a link to theform on the page where you select you want to port your number. Furthermore I'm sure they can add some if...then logic to the "thankyou for your order" page and email that includes the link if porting was selected.

It's a silly thing, but I missed it :P

outbound CID name

This is beyond allo's control. An outbound call only ever sends the number. The provider receiving the call has to map the number to a name using a database. If allo's CLEC(s) allow changing CID name info in the database, they should be able to do this for you, if not, you're out of luck.

unfortunately, we can

unfortunately, we can control the ANI (PSTN legit callerid) but not the Name that will be displayed to the recieing end.
That is the domain of the CLEC terminating the call: it will chek in its CNAM DB and map a name to the number, if the number is present in the DB.

lthown, care to share to link to comcast form? thanks

the number transfer form is

the number transfer form is on allo.com - just not linked to the ordering process. Your webmaster will know where it is and what to do, just pass on the suggestion as worded and they'll say: "oh duh! that's a good idea, gimme a second to do it" - problem solved and your future customers will be happier =)

That's interesting about not having control of the name and it explains why my old "name" is showing up. Good to know.

I am the webmaster for allo.com. Thanks for your suggestion regarding the LNP form. I will make sure to have that added to the registration (order) page asap.

Thanks!

I will give allo.com a try

Elyssa,

Your website looks great and the plans are easy to understand. A lot of the other website hurts my eyes when I tried to understanding pricing.

With that said, I might give allo a try. It seems to fit my bill for my small biz needs and have heard good things from other poster.

Cheers.

e911

Will Allo have e911 as an option anytime soon?? Also it would be nice if they could offer a low monthly DID fee with inbound min charge...

I have got nothing but

I have got nothing but excellent customer service from allo. I signed up for the free trial service on saturday and was very happy with the quality of my inbounds and outbounds calls. Mid-day sunday, my box refused to registered. I thought all was lost and decided to cancel my service after a few chat trials. Guess what? I got several emails and phone calls regarding my experience with their service. My problem was taken care of and they filled me up with assurance that in a little while allo will release a script to alternate proxy in case of problems. I am still trying them out and hoping to downgrade with other service provider and go with 2 years plan. I am loving it.....Thanks to Jacq. Keep up the good work.
At the end, I could not use Allo service because of lack of important information upfront. To turn-off customer phone line for verification doesn't add up to me. After all I still have some unused trial minutes on the account. Well, all is not lost as there are millions and one providers out there.

I signed up for an account

I signed up for an account several days ago but they still haven't processed the payment. Phoned their 800 number and got someone with a heavy East Indian accent saying they would put in a request to have someone call me back which was yesterday and still haven't heard anything. Tried their live online support and it just kept saying all operators are busy. Sent an email and if I don't hear something by tomorrow I may have to reconsider.

Not exactly giving me a warm and fuzzy and I haven't even tried using their service yet!

This is very unusual. From my experience, so far with them their service is reliable and perfect. Customer service are always available but might not get the answer you deserve. (Customer service=what ever you think!)Well, try to call back at the later time maybe someone who knows better might be able to help you. Jacq has always resolved my issue with them with email follow up. Once your service is up and running, you might not need to call them again.

That would be great if I could actually GET their service. They don't seem to even want to process my payment so things are going nowhere fast!

Left the "live online help" running for a few hours. It just said all operators are busy over and over.

This is trying to GET SIGNED UP for the service. God help you if your trying to get support!

Is Allo's backbone support the control of the outgoing callerID directly from trixbox's config yet? Broadvoice doesn't support that and I'm looking to switch to another provider that support it.
