Cisco 7970 w/8.4.1
Has anyone had a chance to test out the new firmware 8.4.1 on a Cisco 7970? I'm hoping to get it working thru NAT (yeah I know, I'm dreaming!) and w/WMI.
The new load looks very interesting, the most visible change is the screen layout.
I will test tomorrow and let you know.

I've been using 8.3.1 and I think I did manage to got the MWI working with the hack. I'm trying to setup trixbox on a VPS (lylix.net) and I can't get it to register. I figure its a NAT issue, so thought I would try a new firmware, but I can't get a SMARTnet contract to dl them... I'll have to find an IT friend to get it at work. Any feedback might be helpful. Thx

Not sure what hack you are referring to with MWI, it works out of the box for me with 8.2
I tried to get the contract for just the 7970 about 3 years ago, but they said that it is not available to US customers. I would have to get a foreign CC or bank account just to get the contract. Apparently in the US you have to buy a contract that covers all model, which was around $100. If this has changed then please say so and perhaps a link to the right item on CDW would be useful.
In terms of the hacks, it was something like adding buddymwi=yes to sip.conf
You should not have to add the 'buggymwi' flag.
With regard to CDW, maybe something has changed. I tested it awhile ago and was able to add a single contract to my cart.
I actually need to buy a contract for somebody else and will give it a go.

You've got me really interested when you say "screen layout." I won't have an opportunity to upgrade ours for another day or so. Can you give maybe a little description of how it looks now?
Unless it was very recently changed CDW will let you order a SMARTnet contract for the 7970. My contract was started just this past April. I'll see if I can find the direct link to what you need.

Last time I tried to order it (maybe 2 yrs ago) I got a call from a sales rep that said since I was located in the US they couldn't sell it to me and that instead I must buy a contract that covers ALL cisco IP phones for something like $90. I said forget it and I got the firmwares from an IT friend that had access to all things Cisco and also gave me three 7960s that the firm tested and was going to junk - their VoIP deployment was for over 5,000 seats.
I'll let you know how it works out.

There are screen shots on CCO just look for release notes and the version number.
I am just getting finished now (it's too late to still be working on the East Coast) so I probably won't have a chance to test until Friday.
I've successfully upgraded one of the 4 7970G IP phones, Yes the screen layout is different. Menus has changed to blue and white instead of yellow , though the old menu is more appealing in my perspective. You will find some of the settings in different submenus than the old ones.
One of the remarkable changes that i've noticed is the support to IPv6 in the 8.4.1.
Another thing i did not like is that when you navigate the menus, the phone becomes very slow moving from one option to another. It almost stops moving sometimes.
After changing the screen background it behaved normally for a couple of minutes, then after pressing the settings key, the phone has crashed losing all the configuration and changing to unprovisioned state. I tried to tftp back same configuration that i used before which has registered the phone successfully with TB 2.6.1 , though they were the same files it did not take them.
I then formatted the phone trying to load the same firmware (8.4.1), it gave an error. I also tried to downgrade it back to 8.3.1 and it gave error too. I will keep trying hopefully i can load the 8.3.1 which was very stable and way faster compared the latest firmware release.
If any one has an idea whether i can go back to an older firmware i'll appreciate it.

In that case I think I'll just stick with 8.3.1 - it have been working well and why change it just for menu changes. It is added new features to SIP then I would consider it.

i am using 8.4.1 sr2 on my 7970 for a few days now with no problems. although if i new the amount of extra work i would be doing with the 7900 series i would have just stuck to the linksys phones. the cisco phones seem to be a pain in the rear for not much added benefit.

The firmware version i had trouble with is 8.4.1S. That phone is still giving error.
I'll download the SR2 and try it. Hopefully it will take the image and work again. Yes you are right... 7970 sometimes is just a pain in the ass. But when they work no other ip phone will compete in term of the voice quality , design, and flexibility of customization.
I saw some clips in YouTube for some people using it with Linux MCE and doing fancy stuff controlling their home media center (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ji8zzUY5zM) . The pain configuring such a phone by itself is the fun part.

The trick is the CP and the -. CP-7970G is the part number not CP7970G. It took me 20 minutes on the phone with Cisco for her to find that she was missing the all important “CP-” section of the device name. If you run into the same problem, call Cisco at 1-800-GO-CISCO and ask for the “Service Contract Center”. Have them look for the part number CP-7970G. Then Conference call your CDW representative. I’m waiting for a call back from my customer rep, then maybe I’ll update with a succesful order.
