Anyone have any experience playing with the Snom M3 and Trixbox ?

I've been looking around for a good cordless dect sip phone to replace the analog cordless dect phones in the house and noticed this one looks very sweet. Looks like it's expandable to 8 handsets, which I really like.

Hey kerry !

Thanks for chimming in. Would be interested to hear what you feel the cons are (if any).
How's the build and call quality ?

We have a set of 4 analog dects at home (with common base) and hate the fact that they all ring as one extension. So I'm really keen on ordering a few of these. They're pretty well priced compared to the Polycom Kirk's I was originally looking at.

Does Trix have endpoint config management on the M3's ?

I have a couple handsets,

I have a couple handsets, overall they are very nice. The call quality is excellent. The handset speaker phone works really well if you are not moving around or don't have ambient noise that is changing a lot. The flexibility of grouping registrations to multiple phones is also great. All and all it is a great little unit they have put out. My biggest lacking right now, I only have 2 handsets and could use a few more:-)

Thanks Philippe, you

Thanks Philippe, you convinced me (twisted my arm) to order them :)

The only negative I've read about them is there's no way to transfer contacts to the phone book, which I hope they'll resolve with a future firmware.

feedback

okay we just bought a base station , and 2 handsets. here are my coments

they take about 25 minutes to configure (including reading the manual)
the manual is pretty good, and the handset is also easy and intuitive to configure.
this is what i did

[1]unpacked the 2 handsets and plugged them into there cradles, they start searching for the base station .
[2] unpack and plug-in the base station , also plug-in our NON DHCP network
[3] use the handset to configure a static IP address on the base station
[4] on handset save settings and reboot base station
[5] goto freePBX and configure 2 sip extension (ie one for each device)
[6] goto web interface of the base station and configure 'indentities 1 and 2' with you new sip extension details
[7] goto telephoney settings and configure how you want each handset to recieve and send calls ie set hanset1 to only receive calls from identity 1 and to only use identity 1 for outgoing calls, do the same for handest2 =incomming calls identity2 and outgoing calls identity2
[8] configure and ring groups or dial plans to use the 2 new sip extensions.
-- all will become a lot clearer once you are actually using the web interface --
Enjoy
BTW
** sound quality is very good almost excellent , it is almost equal to the excellent quality on the snom desktop phone.
** range - easy 50 meters indoors i haven't tested more that this (might need a bigger office :-) )

Good phone small buttons

Yea, I have been using mine in the office for a couple of months now. Overall no major complaints, I just wish they had made the buttons larger. Maybe I just have big fingers but it seems like too much work to dial. Also they have a bug with call transfer. The call transfers OK but the display on the handset indicates otherwise.

Tranfers with Snom m3

Anyone else had problems with both attended and blind transfers with the M3 generating "transfer failed" error messages on the handset?

yeah i am having the same

yeah i am having the same issue, with the original firmware the transfer seemed to work although the failure message was displayed.

I updated to the most recent firmware and since then the transfer actually fails as well as showing the failure message.

anyone else ?

I have the "transfer

I have the "transfer failed!" issue too, but the transfer actually goes.

I've also found that you can't change the handset name in the web interface and have it stick (well, at least I can't.) I change it to the extension number in the base, but it still said "Handset 1" until I changed it in the handset itself.

I guess some of us should report these to Snom, eh?

M3 Blues

We originally loved the M3s as well. You can solve the blind transfer problem by changing the key sequence to # instead of ##. Sound quality is excellent. But here are the quirks.

First, if you lose Internet connectivity at any time (day or night), every phone starts bleeping and blapping until the phones can find your Asterisk server again. This may be what you want in an office. But it doesn't foster long-term marriages in a home environment. We actually unplug our system before we go to bed... just like in the old days. Curiously, that doesn't set off a bleeping episode.

Second, Snom does something funny with SIP. Here's a simple example. Disconnect some other SIP phone on your system that has no voicemail account. Then call the number of that extension from one of your M3 handsets. It will literally send ALL of the M3s into the ozone ultimately rebooting the main unit and reloading firmware on all of the phones. Pretty ugly!

Third, the M3 support for DHCP is awful. Every time it renews its lease, you get a bleeping attack on every handset. That can be solved by hard-coding an IP address into the system unit.

ok here's one

I've been recently reading up on these handsets and I almost shed a tear because I was waiting for something respectable in the cordless arena (that's not a Cisco for $1000 or even better that its not on 802.11 and uses DECT).

I know they have repeaters (thank god). Has anyone tested those? Do they work as expected. Do they interfere with any other 802.11 gear? Can we place them safely next to 802.11 equipment (access points or whatever).

AAAAAND, more importantly, I know theres a 8 handset limitation per base station. How do we get around that? Multiple base stations .. ok, what about the repeaters? Separate repeaters (hope not). 8 is a crippling limitation sometimes, hope theres a workaround.

errerr: out of curiosity,

errerr: out of curiosity, have you looked at the Aastra DECT offering? It seems to be much more expandable than the M3, and more suitable for a business.

The M3 is a great house phone, though.

Oh jeez ... that sounds

Oh jeez ... that sounds terrible. They make this awesome leap into DECT and then transfering barely works. Sounds like its meant for home use only :(.

hey smaikol

Did you find any solution to the one-way audio problem with hold and transfers?
It's my biggest problem right now. I'm on 1.16.

I'm trying to decide if I should bail on snom or stick it out and hope they fix the bugs.

I have been in touch with

I have been in touch with Snom regarding the various issues and apparently there is a major firmware release scheduled that is supposed to resolve this and other issues - such as incoming calls causing all phones to lose contact with the gateway!

Can you use other DECT phones

My understanding is that with most standard DECT base stations you do not necessarily need to use a phone from that vendor. I'm wondering if anyone has tried that with either the Snom and/or Astra system?

Anyone have a good guide for installing an M3 ?
I have only installed polycom phones or the quickphones wi-fi phone from voipsupply.
I think I am missing something on this one.
