wireless handsets for Trixbox, should I go Wifi?

I'm going to be setting up a trixbox for a client and am looking for a good wireless handset. We currently use the Aastra 480i CT phones and those handsets are great, but I'm looking for something that doesn't require that I put 1 hardphone at each desk and pair a wireless handset to it. (I'd rather have everyone just have wireless handsets and maybe 1 or 2 stations have a hard phone)

is there anything out there that is good for this application? I was looking for something that will just have the base station for the handset plug into a cat5 cable (does something like thsi exist?)

what are the advantages of using a wifi phone, keep in mind this will be used in a business environment.

Hi,

Have you tried looking at the kirktelecom IP600V3 system ( http://kirktelecom.com/company/suk251.asp ) ? you just connect the 600 system to your lan and then you can connect any gap compatible dect handset to it. It works perfectly with trixbox.

thanks for the help, any idea how much the handsets cost? I can't seem to find that information anywhere. they will be doing mostly outgoing calls, so they don't need a whole lot of features.

Unfortunately i dont know the price either for 600 system or the kirk handsets - you would need to contact a Polycom reseller to get the price (the Kirk company is now a part of Polycom).

Actually you can use many different brands of dect handsets together with the kirk 600 system as long as they are gap compatible. I tried myself to use some cheap dect handsets and they connected and worked fine with the ip600 system, but they performed badly both on sound quality, handover and battery lifetime - that was when i learned the difference between proffesional handsets and the cheap chinese handsets for home consumers :-)

Personally i have had good experiences with the Kirk handsets - if its for office environment i could especially recommend http://kirktelecom.com/company/suk320.asp

That Aastra sip dect system is more for Enterprises and requires access points so $$$$'s. Your best bet is to just use a decent ATA with a decent DECT cordless phone. It's cheap and works well.

None of the wifi stuff I've seen is business grade. Partly because WiFi is not well suited to SIP.

I'll agree that the current Wifi phones in the market are not "business grade" Most of them lack dedicated transfer button...

However, we have yet to test the new snom M3 (THIS IS NOT A WIFI PHONE BUT...)- It is a soon to be launched product that is "IP - DECT"... So far the pricing seems to be much less than that of the Aastra line and I am told that we should be testing this in a week or so...

Still no physical Transfer button :)

WiFi is NOT DECT. DECT is definitely the way to go for business which is why you are seeing these SIP DECT products.

Spectra-link does a commercial grade wireless IP phone. It's quite expensive, but it is solid.

You need a wireless infrustructor that will handle voice and if the area is large like a warehouse you need AP's that will do voice handoff etc.
