Serial Modem with POTS

I am very new to all this stuff, so this question may not even make sense, hence, why I am asking.

Is it possible to connect the PBX to a POTS line using a normal serial modem (say a new 56K V.92 Hayes). I have installed an X-Lite softphone and it seems to connect to the PBX fine. Now I need to connect to the outside world. I have DSL, POTS and a Skype acount. My pref would be POTS or Skype.

Anyone have any recommendations or perhaps tell me that my plan is or is not even possible? Please note I am not "software knowledgeable", so please keep any replys in "lay-mans" terminology.

Thank you,
Tom

Hi,

have you tried reading the documentation about Asterisk,
because then you will read that only voice modems will work.

you will also learn that Skype is a closed source project and therefor can not talk with other systems.

what you need is a X100P or a DTM400 card, witch will connect to your POST line. alternative get an ISDN2 lines as that cards are much cheaper and they have more features.

Roadkill,

Not so fast on the Skype front. Not only are there SIPtoSkype projects out there that work (I've used one of them personally), but Skype also released an API that would allow a talented AGI coder to hack up something to work with Asterisk. There are several bounties for this currently.

Hi,

yes, and their is already a man in the middle solution as it is now possible to get a Skype to SIP program(windows), but you can only use it call Skype Out and receive calls, so it is still very limited.
and until their is a fullblown Skype module where you can create numbers for Skype Contacts, can receive call calls for multiple users(trunks) I do not consider it user complete.

and with the level of the question it is clearly a newbe we are talking to, so PSTN will give the best result/quality.

I suppose it's true that it's not a "complete" solution, but I would bet that what most people want it for right now is the free North American calling, which the man in the middle solutions work for quite well.

Re: Serial Modem with POTS

First I'd like to thank everyone for responding to my question(s). i have now obtained a SPA3000 as recommended by the gentleman who did the VM machine PBX I am experimenting with. So now I am trying to figure out "how to tell the PBX (via the web interface), what the address is of the SPA3000, or that it even exists. Any toughts/recommendations.

on another note, the comments about the Skype API, yes, it does work well, my business partner was able to use it in our Flight School Software to place outbound calls. very cool stuff is possible with this.

Thank you agin to all that responded to a newbie.
