6757i No Service / 50 BLF "Limit"

We're running TB 2.6.1.10 with 60 extensions. 59 extensions are Snom 320's. These work perfectly.

We were using a Snom 370 with two sidecars on reception, these were configured to monitor every extension using BLF. It worked okay, but periodically the phone would freeze for up to 30 seconds at a time. We tried upgrading the firmware. No change. We tried removing the sidecars, oddly, no change. We tested the wiring, switched the patch point and the switch it was connected to. Still no change. We even tried a 320 set up the same way. No luck.

So we ditched and went to Aastra. Namely, a 6757i with two sidecars. Our first impression and our customers impression was the Aastra is a massive improvement on the Snom. It does not freeze.

However, we have two issues.

The Aastra periodically, randomly displays "No Service". You can make calls from the phone, but the phone does not ring. It usually rights itself after 20 or so seconds. The firmware is Firmware Version 2.5.0.82.

Now, until yesterday we had 60 extensions set up with BLF. We've been told the Aastra only supports 50 BLF. A bit annoying. Especially when you need 60, and the sales info does not shout about this. In the quest to find a solution to the "No Service" issue, we changed 10 of the BLFs to Speed Dials. The problem re-occurs.

We've now been told (by our supplier) that the phone only supports 50 buttons. Not just BLFs. Now this *is* a load of horse, becuase the sales info suggests three sidecars can be bolted on.. Why would you do this if you could only make 50 buttons operate?

In the interest of humour, we've disabled the 10 speed dials so now there are 50 monitored extensions (BLF) and nothing else. I'm not re-assured we're on the right path here.

Edit: No, this makes no difference at all. 10.04.09, same thing.

So, anyone have any ideas on how we can solve our little riddle?

Any help much appreciated.

The number of BLF keys is

The number of BLF keys is limited to 50 (also includes blf/xfer keys). Besides that, there are no limits regarding the number of buttons configured on the sidecar(s). You can configure as many speeddial buttons etc. as you like.

Regarding the "No Service" problem, we'd need some more info to be able to help.

Thanks for replying, Ok,

Thanks for replying,

Ok, what kind of information do you need to have to troubleshoot the ~No Service~ issue besides that provided above?

In the interests of getting us started, here's the "local" and "server" files from the handset...

When the phone displays this message, you can still use the handset to make calls - it just doesn't ring when someone calls it. (Though if other phones in the same call group are ringing, *8 does work to collect the call). The problem with this is that two doors need to be left open to hear the rest of the group.

That point aside, tell me about the 50 BLF limit. Why this number? Is this an issue with Asterisk or something fixed to the Aastra? It would be really worth being able to tweak this; they are a wonderful feature, but to be short by the 5 more we need is... frustrating. FOP and HUD are nice, but flashing buttons and independence from a screen are in some cases preferable.

The 50 BLF limit is a phone

The 50 BLF limit is a phone limit, currently no way to tweak this.

As for the "No Service" problem:
"No Service" means that the phone tried to register (send a REGISTER message to the registrar) but did not get a valid response. The registration status is independent from the ability to make outbound calls, i.e. the phone will still send an INVITE to the proxy if there is currently no valid registration. Of course if your entire IPBX is down, outbound calls won't work either.

Now the question is why the registration fails. What you should do: Next time you see a phone with "No Service", go to its WebUI and check the Registration Status Code on the System Information page (landing page). You should find a number there. This might help to see where the problem could lie.

Thanks, we'll see what we can do. This issue usually lasts 30 seconds, which gives us a pretty small window of opportunity; but we'll certainly try.

I do understand that the BLF limit has been fixed into the hardware; but I think its fair feedback that this is something people want - it'll only help sales of what is clearly a great handset if we're able to utilise more of the expansion bay ports this way.
