Wireless Headset with Remote Answer - DHSG Cable Kit now available
Does anyone know if there is a wireless headset available for the Aastra 55i & 57i phones that supports answering by simply pressing the button on the wireless headset? I think some manufacturers call that "EHS" for electronic hookswitch.
I know you can get that functionality by getting a handset lifter, but that seems like 1980-something.
Hi,
Aastra is preparing a solution for DHSG / EHS for Q1 2009, so stay tuned!

Aastra - any news on this?
Thanks!
Hi,
We have now a DHSG Cable Kit, it will be available in April 09.
Aastra’s DHSG headset support has been tested and verified with the following products:
- GN Netcom GN 9350, GN 9350e, GN 9120, GN 9125.
All require the GN 14201-10 cable.
- Plantronics CS60, CS70N, CS351N, and Voyager 510S.
All require the APS-1 adapter cable.
- Sennheiser BW900. Requires the TCI 01 adapter box.
Note that if one or more expansion modules are connected to the phone, you can't use the DHSG Cable Kit.
Latest software 2.5.0 should be used for DHSG.

Your kidding right? During product development the question: Who would be using this type of product? (has to come up). Typically office receptionists that would handle the call volume that would warrant the use of such device would be using an expansion modules for call handling.
This is most disappointing, and should be revisted sooner than later. I would think the cable kit could be made to split off the plug for an expansion module.
We love Aastra products for the most part. Two words for future products "Focus Group"
I have the GN 9350e
Do I need to buy both the GN 14201-10 cable and also the new Aastra DHSG cable kit, or just the Aastra kit?
What is the part number for the Aastra kit?
Thanks
Hi,
If you want to use a DHSG headset with an Aastra phone, you need the Aastra DHSG Cable Kit in any case.
If your headset base station has a native DHSG interface, you can directly connect the Aastra cable to that interface. Most headsets don't have a native DHSG interface, including the models listed in the post above that have been tested and verified by Aastra. Therefore you will also need the appropriate DHSG interface cable or adapter box from the headset vendor. So for you GN 9350e, you'll need the GN 14201-10 cable.

I have to agree with euser4life - the person most likely to use this is the multifunction receptionist. Just about all of the clients we install have reception sidecars.
Is the reason a physical connection issue or a software/programing issue?

Has this been released yet? If so, who is selling the DHSG cable kit.
The fact that expansion modules and DHSG cannot be used together is unfortunate, I agree. But this limitation is given by the hardware. EHS/DHSG wasn't a requirement of the initial product design. We're happy to be able to provide now a solution with the DHSG Cable Kit for the 6753i, 6755i and 6757i phone - at least for those who don't use a side car.
There has been some delay. We will announce the part no. in this forum once the kit is available.

I assume there will be no magic change to this in the future - where say you could have 1 side card, and use the EHS cable??
Dear aastra4,
Why don't you answer our simple questions ?
Do we need GN 14201-10 cable AND Aastra DHSG cable kit ? Or is it the same think ?
If not, where can we buy the (available since 04/09) Aastra DHSG cable kit ?
Is this new feature available for 5xi series ?
Thank you.
Gregory.
Hi Gregory,
I think I made it clear in one of my posts above. But I'm happy to explain it again:
- DHSG support is a new feature of the Aastra 6753i, 6755i and 6757i SIP phone. Firmware >= 2.5.0 should be used.
- You'll need the Aastra DHSG Cable Kit in any case.
- Depending on your headset, you also need a DHSG cable / adapter from the headset vendor. For the GN 9350, GN 9350e, GN 9120 or GN 9125, you'll need the GN 14201-10 cable.
- There has been some delay. We will announce the part no. in this forum once the kit is available.

aastra4
Dear aastra4,
Someone from Aastra telle me that the 5xi series support DHSG ? Is it wrong ?
And what's the difference between 675xi series and 5xi series ?
Thank you.
Gregory.
Hi Gregory,
The 675xi and 5xi series phones are exactly the same, only the name has changed some months ago. This is a cosmetic change only.

It is really stupid that Aastra do not provide DHSG / EHS - Expansion modules combined support.
It would have been so simple to develope a small DHSG interface Box connected to the PC ethernet port, instead of using the Expansion port.
I've submitted this to Aastra France more than eight month ago, for sure they did not listen and prefered to develop something simpler on the expansion port.
Perhaps that Aastra engineers have the same problem than Airbus ones, do not create modern things - keep old non floating black boxes with hard disks instead of transmitting regularly informations to satellites -
It is not funny to see that big manufacturers keep open SIP phones market at a low level of sophistication, certainly to avoid concurance with traditional telephony proprietary terminals.
DHSG full support with expansion modules present, as well as lack of Qwerty keyboards, are the two main problems of open SIP phones.
It is a big problems for integrators, and manufacturer know this. They do not want to destroy the closed market of traditional telephony.
Please Aastra develope a 5xi PC port to DHSG interface box, so that integrators can do their job selling your SIP products.
Thanks.
An Adapter connected via Ethernet wouldn't be easy but they could have designed one for the expansion port which allows to connect additional devices. Snom does it like that.
Btw. did anyone receive an Adapter Cable yet? I would like to have the schematics to build one myself.
It sounds like it *does* use the expansion port - just not in a way that allows other expansion port devices to work. My guess is that the expansion port isn't a generic interface (like serial), and that is why it doesn't work with expansion modules.
@code0: It does.
Someone from from Aastra wrote in the German Aastra forum that the extension port is reconfigured to send the DHSG signals. They should know it as they developed the extensions and the current case design.
I think they use the serial line as a simple I/O.
Options->Phone Preferences->Set Audio
Seems to me that a remote lifter should still work without any further adapters. We just need a 5th Audio preference option to "override" sound through the headset port whenever handset goes off-hook. Then the Speaker/Headset button would still toggle sound between the headset & speaker and not between all three: handset, speaker, headset. A firmware update should provide this functionality.
By the way, no results on google search: D0062-0011-34-00 site:aastra.com

Looks like the DHSG answering function requires a firmware update to 2.5.1. Unfortunately, my VOIP provider will not let me update to this because they said it will break their other functionality, so my $60 investment in new cables and such for my headset will have to wait to be really useful. At least I can talk on it now, though I have to be at my desk to answer a call or hang up.
...but nothing about a cable. You can download the pdf and firmware at http://www.aastratelecom.com/cps/rde/xchg/SID-3D8CCB6A-A2300539/0... but I did some experiments with the Jabra bluetooth adapter and it works pretty good. You can create a cable adapter for it by simply putting a 2.5mm jack on an RJ9(?) handset cord to match the headset jack on the back of the Aastra phone.
It's already been done for the Cisco and Polycom phones by several headset web sites (just google 2.5mm & cisco & headset). I found that just going from 4 wire to 3 wire and adjusting the Aastra MIC settings would get it working. How well it works depended on the brand of headset. Cheap worked better than expensive.
FYI, though. Cisco impedence is not the same as Aastra's - I only use it for an example. Telephonyware http://www.telephonyware.com/telephonyware/tw00537.html says their RJ9 to 2.5mm adapter works with the Aastra 9120 and that may be a start. MIC and other settings can be changed using the .cfg file settings.
As advertised, I got working a GN9350e headset + GN DHSG Cord (14201-10) + Aastra D0062-0011-34-00 cord. Very smooth and fast off/on-hook response time.
With these two y-cables linked together, it stretches 8ft!! For giggles, I did a pin-for-pin match thinking I could roll-my-own cable. But it seems two wires have a resister on them - I'm not cutting cables yet to find out. But, its no big deal to cut cable excess and crimp new rj45 ends.
Can anyone provide me with the Pinouts for the following cables.
GN DHSG Cord (14201-10)
Aastra D0062-0011-34-00 cord
Also do i really need the Aastra cable ? I have an Aastra 57i.
is this cable still necessary? this is quite an old thread.. i'm looking to use jabra 9350e's with the aastra 57i. will the headset work without a lifter?
Yes, the cable is still needed for answering the phone via pressing the headset's answer button (on the actual headset itself and sometimes also on the headsets base).
Headsets will work fine w/o a lifter, but you'll have to press a button on the phone to get the phone to answer. Just use the headset port on the bottom of the phone and adjust the mic gain and speaker volume via the phone's "Options" menu. (Options/Preferences/Set Audio/...).
The real excitement about the DHSG (in my opinion) is being able to answer the phone when you are away from your phone (walking around). This is why I'm not so worried about secretarial positions because they need to be at the phone anyway (most of them, not all). Yes, it would have been nice to have the cake and eat it too. ;-)
In reply to danhole.
I built an adapter cable myself, works fine. Audio connection via the supplied cable from GN.
DHSG GN Aastra Name 1 3 5 Tx 2 4 1 GND 3 - - Mic 4 - - Spk 5 - - Spk 6 - - Mic 7 5 7 DC 3,3V 8 6 4 Rx
and if you use the headset / cable kit, you cannot use an expansion module. if you have the 6757CTi, you can still use the wireless handset as well, correct?
Thanks for the pin outs, i have bought the two cables now but nevermind.
I still cannot get the solution to work however.
I have connected the cable up as described but do not hear the rining and pressing the button doesnt pick up the call.
I have turned dhsg on in the phone.
When i reboot the phone i do hear the ringing tone come through the headset just before it gets a dhcp address.
Has anyone got any ideas ?
Thanks
Dan
Are you sure that you got the right GN cable (should be marked with blue heat-shrink) and that your Headset supports DHSG (only 9350 and some 9120 Models)?
