GXW-4104 Not Functioning

I am trying to get a GXW-4104 up and running for the first time for a new phone system that needs to go live on April 2nd. I have been trying to get it properly configured and have been unsuccessful at getting it to work - either for outbound or inbound calls. The most I got was for a few calls it would give me a dial tone after a couple of rings. I have tried every config and tutorial online that I can find and it hasn't helped. Here is my setup...

Trixbox Server - v2.0 - 192.168.0.2
gxw4104 - 192.168.0.3
Analog lines connected to the FXO inerface.
Using single stage dialing

Under my trunk config I put in exactly the info that was in the tutorials....

context=from-trunk
host=192.168.0.3
insecure=port
type=peer

Inside of freepbx I have the all cid selected so I don't think its a problem there. I even tried adding an inbound route that matches the auto dial number that the tutorial has you put into the gxw.

For outbound calls I either get a busy signal when dialing out or it will just hang with silence until a voice comes on that says I should try dialing the area code. It seems that the setup should be so simple but it is just not working so I wonder if the box I have is just defective or something.

As an aside I am also having trouble upgrading the firmware on the unit. I set the upgrade to TFTP and set auto upgrade to yes. I set the TFTP server field to my trixbox address and then dropped the three files downloaded from grandstream in the tftpboot directory. It doesn't seem to take though.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

Working Somewhat Now

Thanks for the quick response Kerry. I have been over that tutorial about 20 times and it still doesn't seem to work. Inbound calls work now. I am testing with a spare line before our system gets switched over XXX-0147. I used the current testing phone number and now it goes through. I was using XXX-7776 before because that is the final ultimate number I want to use when the system goes live. Maybe its just dumb luck, I dunno.

Two problems I'm still having with it...

1. When dialing out I get a 486 Busy - Remote Party Busy response.

2. When the FXO answers the phone it doesn't start ringing the internal pbx phones until about the third ring.

If anyone can help with these to issues it would be great.

Thanks,

Michael

Firmware

What version of Firmware are you running? The Grandstream site says that 1.0.0.41 is the current, but I know I have seen in these forums that 1.0.0.52 is out there - meybe even later. I also purchased one, and then had to return it bacause I never could get it to dial out reliably - in the notes, they mention Qwest (Our RBOC) as one of the known problems with the Gateway.

Maybe a better question would be, does anyone have one of these working? What FW? What RBOC? SIP Line Config? Screen Shots from the config screens?

I love the HandyTone-386's - we use them everywhere, and the price is sure good on the 4104, but after 3 e-mail rounds and two firmware's, I had to give up and move on.

BTW, AudioCodes Analog Gateways work fine with Asterisk - in case the deadline gets too close.

My System Info

Thanks for the info Greg. Here is my current system info...

GXW-4104 running firmware 1.0.0.40 (What it came with)
PSTN Line from AT&T/SBC
Trixbox 2.0
Trixbox is on the same vlan as the GXW so no nat or anything is necessary.

I would be running the new version from their site 1.0.0.41 but it doesn't seem to want to upgrade to it. I downloaded it and put it out on the tftp server for trixbox that serves all of my other phones firmware but it doesn't take. Since this device has no display or console ports it is really hard to say what happens when it boots up. I did get it to answer the phone a couple of times and then it quit picking up the pstn line again. Still haven't gotten outbound dialing to work at all.

Thanks for the pointer on the AudioCodes Gateways. I may just have to order one of those and have it sent next-day to get it in time. That would make me really disappointed because from everything I read I thought that the grandstream was going to be an easy setup and work good.

Same Here

The Audiocodes works well, but Wowzers - it has about 15 screens of single-spaced options, and to get it working, you only need about 7 blanks filled in - finding those seven is another story.

In all truth and beauty, the Grandstream IS easy to set up - One of the folks over at Voipspeak did a review/tutorial on setting it up, and I had it set up in about 2 minutes flat with this guide:

http://voipspeak.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=11...

However, even looking at tracing in Asterisk with MAX verbosity, it just seems like the one I had doesn't like any lines I tried on it - just says no dice. I would offer to send you the firmware I have (1.0.0.49) but like I said, I know it is at least up to 1.0.0.52 - search the Grandstream forum here, and maybe the people that were posting about it got theirs running.

Good luck!

Greg

I think its really dead now

Ok, I think the thing finally gave up the ghost. I was having trouble where the gateway could not be pinged sometimes and then I would just wait awhile and work on something else and then I would try it again and I could get to the web interface again too. It stopped working awhile ago and didn't come back. The LAN light was blinking but I couldn't find it on the network at its ip address of 192.168.0.3 or the default ip address of 192.168.0.160. I decided to reset it to the factory settings again as I have done to it many times before. After doing that it is totally unreachable at either address.

I contacted grandstream support by email this morning (which seems to be the only way in case you're wondering) and they opened a ticket and said they will contact me within 72 hours. I talked with the place I bought it from and they provide paid support but not for gateways. So I guess I'm kind of stuck. The office will open tomorrow without a phone system I guess. The earliest I will see the replacement is Wed or Thurs of this week. This makes me not so confident in the grandstream products.

Some Progrees - Need Firmware Upgrade Help

Ok, I managed to get the unit back online again. I am working to get the firmware upgraded to the current .41 version from my .40 version. I learned one valuable hidden piece of info that the cable needs to be connected to the WAN port to see the TFTP server and download configs from it. I sucessfully got it to download config files off the TFTP server now but it doesn't even seem to request the firmware files at all. All it asks for is a cfg.txt file. Can anyone who has upgrade firmware on these point me to any other scarcely documented procedures that might help me upgrade the firmware.

BTW, no response yet from Grandstream support.

Thanks,

Michael

Firmware

Hi all,

For those guys who need the last firmware version .52. Drop me an email and i will send it
to you.

Fixed a lot of troubles for me, especially the problem when nobody picks up the phone after 40 second of ringing, the devices lockes up. And when this happend no calls can beplaced through the device, als incomings calls doesn't work anymore.

Got the new firmware running voor 3 weeks now, and no mayjor problems any more.
Except, that you can't specify wich FXO line to use on an outgoing trunk. But the tolled that the are working on that, but they need some feedback on how whe would like to see it.

I've upgraded the device through a TFTP server running on windows and not on TrixBox.

With dear regards,

To Michael: I am using both

To Michael: I am using both the GXW-4104 and the GXW-4004 gateways and had problems getting them configured as well. I did finally manage to figure it all out before Grandstream got back to me on it, so if you are still having problems let me know how to contact you (or vice versa) by telephone to walk through the setup.

To Gerwin: I am interested in the firmware upgrade. Please let me know how to contact you in order to receive it.

To anyone else: The specified line per outgoing trunk issue-- I was under the impression that this could be done through Asterisk/freePBX, instead of managing it through the gateways. Does anyone know if you can specify which outgoing lines to use depending on which extension is picked up? I understand how to use the dialing rules, but there are times that those rules overlap and I want to be able to specify by which extension is selected.

Any help will be appreciated.

Getting Farther Along

Ok, after trying to get this to work for a week this is what I am finding out...

* Version 1.0.0.52 firmware is lots better than the public releases that are out there...
* Outbound calling just doesn't happen.
* For some reason when you set any sort of QoS settings on this gateway the audio and signaling packets do not get across the network properly. ( I am using linksys SRW224P switches and it could be my config. They work fine with QoS using GXP2000's though.)
* Firmware likes to be upgraded over the WAN inteface using a Windows TFTP server connected directly with a crossover cable.

I would still like to get outbound calling working but I guess you can't have everything in a phone system. Has anyone else out there done a similar setup that could help? I am using GXP2000 phones on their own VLAN and terminating calls into PSTN lines using GXW-4104. Shouldn't be that hard but it has managed to take a week of my life away.

No luck so far with 4104

I setup the SIP trunk as follow:

trunk name: grandstream

peer details:
context=from-trunk
host=192.168.225.250
insecure=port
type=peer

then I created an outbound route (the only one I have) and tried using 9|. ,1|., or simply .
chose the grandstream trunk and submitted the changes... then clicked on "apply config changes"

created a SIP extension as follow:
extension: 100
display name: user
secret: 1111

in x-lite softphone, I configured it to use that extension... and everytime i try to dial out, i get a busy signal... anything missing here?

4104 is setup correctly as per voipspeak.net review...

any help is greatly appreciated!

ok... so I got it to work... briefly and after rebooting trixbox and grandstream 4104 it stopped working... looks like a very unreliable device/appliance.

It Works!!!

After I finally gave up on this gateway and was going to get something different I finally got it to work. It seems that the first time I upgraded to the .53 firmware it didn't really upgrade. I upgraded it again and then it had lots of new settings that weren't there before. It seems that with these gateways the key to getting outbound dialing to work is to play with the current disconnect threshold, delay before dialing, wait before dialtone, and all the dtmf digit volumes and tone lengths. I guess I must have found the magic numbers. If you are having problems try setting your delay before dial and current disconnect to the max. You can work the numbers back down later once you find a working config. Basically it will just take longer to dial the line and disconnect it.

I still am not using caller id with this box. It seemed that when it was enabled it would only recognize it about half of the time. When it is enabled it doesn't send the call to trixbox until the third ring. This can be a problem if you don't have someone sitting right on a phone because by the time the phone rings 3 times in the building the person calling already heard 6 rings and is thinking about hanging up.

Call quality is ok but I do hear some echo at times. I am going to keep this gateway for now because I don't have the box anymore to return it. I would recommend that if you seriously are looking at this for a business application though that you might want to look at a more solid solution like Digium, Rhino, or Sangoma. I will probably upgrade to one of these when I get a little $$ to do it.

.53 beta firmware

Could you tell me what settings you've changed to get it to work? If I reboot the unit, I can make outbound calls... my inbounds are not working though.

Thanks,

Firmware Upgrade Nightmare

For those who are having trouble actually achieving a firmware upgrade, Try HTTP. After exhasuting myself troubleshooting TFTP (even tried crossover right up the server), I took a shot at HTTP (IIS 6), - did three or four power cycles, and eventually it picked up the firmware!

Word of warning to all tho - be careful when you do a power cycle - don't kill it's power if it's in the middle of the upgrade. Hint: keep all the FXO ports unplugged, and when the boot is finished, they'll stay unlit.

.... Now I just need to configure it...

Fix Dial Out Issue

Folks -

I suppose the term "Fix" is a bit charitable here; but try turning the "Wait for Dial Tone" to No. I'm in Australia, and our dial tone is -slightly- different to what you have in North America; so the unit is never going to get the dialtone it wants. My system is now sucessfully dialing in and out.

Don't know how solid this is, but at least I can move on for now! Hooray!

CID and delay for outbound

mpberry,
I really hate to break it to you but the same issue's you faced with the device you just setup will popup no matter what device you use, tis the nature of the beast...Facts of FXO life.
The delay for three ring for CID is that CID is not sent until the second ring so TB must wait for it.
The delay needed for outbound dailtone could be that the two ports are miss matched for voltage (impedance)

Aside from the problems

Aside from the problems actually flashing the gateway with .53, I don't see a single problem with this upgrade. When I get a chance, I'll post the settings and procedures in the Wiki for everyone to compare against.

I will agree with Bubba in that almost all problems that are occurring are simply the nature of the FXO beast. Everyone realizes that any PBX with FXO and FXS does 70% of what the PSTN's CO does but in a tiny box, right? We're just doing it on a fraction of the budget and cheaper equipment than what they use.

Yes, it works.

IT WORKS
Outbound dialing works well, with te firmware 1.0.0.53 and setting the option "4. Wait for Dial-Tone (Y/N):" to "N".

Now, in Asterisk, you can dialout with:
exten => 9,1,Dial(SIP/47852139@192.168.0.160) ; using round robin
or
exten => 9,1,Dial(SIP/99147852139@192.168.0.160) ; using line selection

Success Story (well so far...)

We plugged in our new Grandstream GXW-4104.

Before doing anything else we upgraded it to 1.0.0.53 using a free tftp server called Pumpkin
get it here

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Servers/Other-Servers/PumpK...

then followed instructions on this link

http://forge.trixbox.org/gf/project/trixbox2/wiki/?section=projec...

within minutes it was working, inbound and outbound

The only thing we noticed that when calling the office it took a few rings before the GS kicked in. Something to do with getting called id?

Hope this helps others

I also have a GXW-4104

I also have a GXW-4104 working well both inbound and outbound. I am using 1.0.0.53 firmware.

I have the trunks set up using the following in the PEER Section.

canreinvite=no
context=from-trunk
host=dynamic
secret=10001
type=friend

I have nothing in the INBOUND Section or the REGISTER Section

This allows both inbound and outbound calls, once you have Inbound and Outbound rules set up.

Also you need to configure the gateway to do 1 Step dialling, and also configure the Off-Hook dial setting (I have it configured without a number, but its configured)

Works! But not always.

Hello,

I have upgraded too the firmware version 1.0.0.53. And it works. But after two days it stops incoming and outcoming calls. When I try outcoming I recieve a message from asterisk: "all circuits are busy now, please try again later". If I reboot (manually, because the web interface doesn't reboot the device) the gateway works fine again (I can reboot the on the web interface too), but after two or three days I have the same problem. How can I solve this?

Thank you,

Me Too

I had users call me today with random call drops like this also. It has been working fine otherwise for the past month or so. I changed the gain settings on the line and I'm going to see what happens. Even though this box has been working ok for me in the past few weeks I still am not very trusting of it and am looking into getting a Rhino or Sangoma card for inside my trixbox and selling the GXW. I am also going to start upgrading off of the Grandstream office phones because I just don't feel the quality is there.

Anyone else have any ideas on the calls dropping?

If you have had it running

If you have had it running for a month your configurations can't be that far off.
Ours started dropping incoming calls after a couple of days

What are your Grandstream trunk configurations?

Show Stopper

Hi!

The beta page seems empty except for one document below on port scheduling. Has anyone talk to Grandstream Support lately? I have done installation of a 24 phones site lately, 2-GXP2000 and 22-BT200 with PSTN gateway using GXW-4104. Able to run the gateway after updating to the latest release firmware. After few days GXW-4104 calls are dropping and hangs-up every other day that need to power cycle to make it working again. It is isolate when calls are terminated by the gateway. Not on phone-to-phone calls.

Do you experience the drop calls? If anyone here answers NO, pls shout and tell us your firmware version. Most installation do not require the round robin anyway.

It is very easy to tell the indication of the bug, set-up BLF to monitor any of the port and observe the status when that port is occupied, its blinking on GXP-2000 meaning the port is reporting neither idle or busy. I suspect the processor is doing unnecessary thing in that area. Can it be also that the device is detecting a hang-up condition instead that lead to prematurely dropping the calls.

One good thing maybe it can help. Some guys are asking in this thread, you need to set rr:1;rr:2; rr:3;rr:4; in round robin field to fix the port assignment. It is document here http://www.grandstream.com/BETATEST/GXW4104_GXW4108/GXW410X_Port_...

The latest release_GXW410X_1.0.0.55 is already used. The error in BLF function might help solving or part of the problem. Please comment on that.

I got other brand gateway, BLF is working fine for GXP-2000 phones.

Firmware Upgrade

I will try the new upgrade as soon as I can. Things have been working a little better since I tweaked the gain settings. There is still a lot of line noise heard on the lines in terms of scratchyness and hum... I haven't done much testing with a regular phone on the line though to know whether it could be the lines at the building as we have never had a different phone system plugged into them to compare it to.

I am glad to see Grandstream posting in the forums now. It makes me feel like they are following some of the issues that their users are having now and trying to help with their problems. Thanks!!!!

GS GW 4104

I have been using this gateway when it was first introduced, mainly to replace the 488 to pick up incoming calls. After a few firmware evolutions, the unit was functioning the way it's supposed to do. I was glad that it was not fronzen at times like the 488 and the voice quality is better. However, I have never been able to use it to call out. Same problem with the 488 fxo port. I was told that it had something to do with traditional telco lines in North AMerica, because even the 488 works OK with lines from cable company, and I know the unit works in other countries as well. GS should look into the problem. ANyone saying it works for both incoming and outgoing should note the telco that provides service in their area (I noticed Argentina in earlier messages). I am especially interested in results from the NA West Coast in either ATT/Verizon serving areas. Just tested 1.0.0.5. It works for incoming call as well. I am not sure if it will drop calls. No luck with outgoing call still. Please keep up with the good work. Thanks.

Gs GW 41xx with Verison

I am running the latest 1.0.0.55 version and don’t have anymore problems with making calls in and out. I initially had issues with it but contacted their tech support to find out that Verizon lines are very tricky with their voltage levels on the line settling stage. So after setting the Current threshold to about 700+ my outgoing problems were fixed. The explanation I received pointed out that Verison lines have longer then usual wink which is about 500+ ms but it also depends on your distance from the CO which may extend this period as well. During this 500+ ms the line voltage goes below the operational level and the GXW41xx interprets this as if there was no more power on the line. So After programming the current threshold time to be a little higher then this line settling wink I had no more problems

Current Threshold 700+

Yes, I got it working after I set the current threshold to 700ms. Thanks. I also have to set the delay before dial to 500/600 ms to make it working reliably (default 100ms is too low).
Now I have problem controlling the # of ring before pickup. The 488 allows me to do this. The GW4104 is set to 2, but no way to change this. Any ideas?
I also received the message:
rtp.c:460 ast_rtp_read: RTP Read too short on my Asterisk console
repeatedly after I completed the dial out connection. I wonder if this is related to GW4104 or to the parameters in my Asterisk.

I am using 1.0.0.55.

Ring wait

They do have an option which is pretty cool. You can disable the CID detection and allow the gateway to immediately pick up. All you have to do is go to the Fxo Lines page in the web UI and set the Caller ID Transport Type to 2 which disabled the cid detection as if the number of rings is set to 0. This is also port programmable so if you really need to know the Cid on particular line you can leave it running 

DTMF detection and sound quality

inbound/outbound calls are fine, using FW1.0.0.55

#1 problem with DTMF recognition while using a remote IVR system. Example, place call to my bank using GXP-2000 via trixbox via GXW-4104 all on the same LAN, call goes through but my bank bank's IVR does not recognize my PIN number, have to input it several times, often pressing the buttons slower and with a longer duration for my bank to recognize my PIN. Same call via Digium TDM card is fine.

#2: most calls sound scratchy and hissy

Anybody else with these issue?
found a fix?

I actually want the system to wait for 3 rings before picking up. This will allow enough delay for the call forward to work with the line. Otherwise, the 4101 always picks up the line before the provider has a chance to intercept and forward the call to some other number.

re:DTMF detection and sound quality

use RFC2833 (only)
try use a longer DTMF tone duration and separation between DTMF
increase RTP frame size from 2 byte to a larger value

Will 4104 support caller ID?

For incoming calls, the 4104 will pass the same registered number(s) set for the gateway to the asterisk PBX it works with. I wonder if there is a way for the 4104 to capture the caller id (if caller id is subscribed) from the incoming calls and pass the caller id information to asterisk or to a sip phone. If so, what will the set up look like.

Reset to factory GXW4104

Somebody of you has restored to factory GXW4104? (by press switch near to jack 12V). My GXW4104 became a brick after that reset.
Thanks

Reset to factory GXW4104

I solved the problem. After reset GXW4104, it wake up with DHCP client ON, so it loss dafault IP address (192.168.0.160) and show up on 192.168.1.33 (in my case). Thanks ethereal

Yes, same here. Outbound

Yes, same here. Outbound was fiarly straight forward, but my FXO lines tab has a very fifferent line 6, no mention of a magical autodial. My line 7 seems to want a uri?

The answer is YES: Go

The answer is YES: Go under "FXO Settings"--> PSTN to VOIP Caller ID Setting --> Caller ID Transport Type---> Use "Relay via SIP From", which is the default setting.
