I can't believe I'm the first one to mention this, but I searched the forums and couldn't find anyone else with this problem. I can't install the client because it complains about not having Mac OS Java VM 1.5. As far as I know there IS NO version 1.5 on mac yet. The latest version offered by Apple is 1.4.2_12 which was release just 14 days ago. Is the HUDlite Mac OS X client even compatible with OS X?
BIG Problem installing HUDlite client on Mac OS X Tiger
Same problem here. Funny thing is I had Hudlite installed on 10.4, however I recently applied a patch from Apple for Java (dated 2/16/07) called Java for Mac OSX 10.4 Release 5, and since then Hudlite hasn't worked.
I thought I'd reinstall, so I deleted hudlite from my Mac and re-downloaded and tried to reinstall. Now I get the same message about not having Mac OS Java VM 1.5 installed.
Any help from anyone is much appreciated!
I am experiencing the same issue. I downloaded hud-lite-1.1.160.dmg, double-clicked to mount the image, ran the installer, and after clicking [Continue], was greeted with my hard drive icon with a red octagonal stop sign with white exclamation point. Clicking the drive you get the message:
"You cannot install HUDLite on this volume. This application requires Mac OS Java VM 1.5 to run. Visit fonality.com to futher details." (And yes, it reads "to futher", not "for further" as it should. Oh, and where exactly on that site would be find useful information?)
A quick firing up of the Terminal and typing in 'java -version' and we see:
____________________________________________________________
java version "1.5.0_07"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_07-164)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_07-87, mixed mode, sharing)
____________________________________________________________
As can be clearly seen, the installer is not testing properly, as I DO have Java VM 1.5.
Just to be complete, I'm using a MacBook Pro 15"/2GHz Core Duo/1GB RAM/100GB HD running Mac OS X 10.4.8 (Build 8L2127) with all the latest patches.
Anyway, would love to test this out, but without being able to install it, no dice. A quick question for the developers. Why use an installer vs. just making a .dmg file which contains the binary that one can drag to the /Applications folder? Does HUDLite really require the use of an installer? This is rather old-style for most Mac apps these days.
P.S. [Preview] in this forum generates a lot of break tags, which then mess up the next preview. Had to remove them to make this look right. Just FYI for the webmaster of the forum.
I am seeing the exact same issue as fseesink.
Robert
Anyone know of a fix for this? Sounds like it will require some changes by Fonality to the way the app installs and checks for Java.
Me too. I had HUDLite working on one of my Macs, but can't install it on any of them now and it is broken on that one, even though we have the prequisite Java VM installed. Isn't there someone from fontality monitoring this forum so that we can get a solution?
I guess we cant' scream to loud -- Hudlite is free, but still would be nice if it worked. :-?
The installer is doing a bad job of testing which Java version we have, even when we have a newer version of java than required.
I found a hacky solution to this problem.
Here are the steps (but the developers should really make a new installer)
1. Make sure you have the NEWEST version of java. Download; install.
2. Download Hudlite
3. Double click on the DMG file to mount to your computer
4. Open the new disk image with the hudlite installer and copy the installer somewhere to your harddrive (because the disk image is write-only)
5. Open Terminal.app
6. Navigate to the directory with the installer PKG file
7. cd hud-lite-1.1.160.pkg/
8. cd contents
9. vi Info.plist
10. scroll down to the section where it says
11. Delete everything between
12. type ESCAPE then "wq!" to write the file and quit.
13. type "exit" and double click on the PKG install file. It should work now.
yay!
aasaria,
Bingo! Excellent directions. And nice detail for those not familiar with using a *nix command line or vi. Followed them, and had no trouble installing or running HUDLite after that. Now I just need to get Asterisk working properly. :-P
Of course, I'm still curious why they feel the need to use an installer at all. I understand about seeing whether a user has Java installed, but as for most users, they'll be just fine since Java comes with OS X. So unless you take pains to remove Java, HUDLite should "just work" if you drop the app into the /Applications folder.
Anyway, nice workaround for now. Hopefully the Fonality/HUDLite folks will notice this thread and at least update the installer package. As jloretz said, we can't exactly complain since HUDLite is free, but I suspect that even folks who provide software at no cost (in fact, ESPECIALLY such folks most of the time) WANT their software to install cleanly and be easy to use. I mean, what's the point of giving it away otherwise? This isn't exactly abandonware or software from systems long gone. It's top tier Internet telephony software.
Anyway, thanks to you for the workaround, thanks to the HUDLite folks for the software in the first place, and thanks to this forum for giving those who look a way to get help.
Awesome aasaria! Worked like a charm!
Thank you!
John
the html got messed up a little in my solution. here it is again:
1. Make sure you have the NEWEST version of java. Download; install.
2. Download Hudlite
3. Double click on the DMG file to mount to your computer
4. Open the new disk image with the hudlite installer in it and copy the installer somewhere to your harddrive (because the disk image is read-only)
5. Open Terminal.app
6. Navigate to the directory with the installer PKG file (that might mean "cd Desktop" if you put it on your desktop
7. cd hud-lite-1.1.160.pkg/
8. cd contents
9. vi Info.plist
10. scroll down to the section where it says Message Key -- this is the section where the installer sets conditions that must be fulfilled for the install to work. We want to delete all conditions.
11. Delete everything between and so that all you have left is <array> and </array> separated by a new line. You can delete in VI by typing "d" twice
12. press the ESCAPE key then type "wq!" to write the file and quit.
13. type "exit" (then ENTER) and double click on the PKG install file. It should work now.
I followed the excellent directions on hacking the Info.plist (and by the way, the answer to your questions about whose fault this is - it's the InstallAnywhere product I believe) but when I click the application it immediately fails with a JVM exit 1. My Java version string:
java version "1.5.0_07"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_07-164)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_07-87, mixed mode, sharing)
The error text includes:
arch = ppc
which leads me to believe I cannot use this on an Intel Mac. Can anyone verify this?
Same thing here, when I double click on the "HUD" application, I get a"JVM Terminated" message... Anyone knows how to fix this?
I had this same problem initially. Instead of launching the HUD application, I tried launching the startup.jar file, and everything started working :-)
followed the same little hack to get it installed. Initially clicking on HUD, I get the JAVA error as others have reported, so I launched the startup.jar file, but noticed that the application has a lot of screen tearing, and artifacting and eventually crashes after a couple mins. I would love for them to release a stable build for OSX.. im runnin a macbook pro
I posted this in a different message thread, give it a try.

OK, I think I've figured out a work around for 1.1.160.1 on the Mac.
1) Use Pacifist to Install HUDLite (http://www.charlessoft.com/)
2) Once Installed go to the HUDLite Folder
3) Right Click on HUDLite and select "Show Package Contents"
4) Navigate to "Contents/MacOS"
5) Open the file eclipse.ini in a text editor
6) Remove the last two lines "-name" and "HUD Lite"
7) Save the file
Launch HUDLite.
TaDa!
YMMV.
Just to let everyone know, I downloaded what appears to be a newer version of Hudlite... 1170 is the new OSX Version on their website.. It installs fine and also runs as expected without the issues I mentioned above. I See no news of the new version, so appears to be a stealth upgrade.
I am sorry, but the error - described almost nine month ago - does still exist with my Intel Mac.
I am still NOT able to install Hudlite 1170 on a Mac. Anyone else? Are there alternatives to HUDlite on a Mac with trixbox?
Just do as they describe above and make sure all the stuff inside the <array> </array> is deleted. It's a great workaround.
Thanks everyone.
